English Dub Review: The Duke of Death and His Maid “The Duke, a Crow, and Ice Skating”

Overview:

Viola comes to visit because she wants to see Rob. Viola is a “Panther” which means she’s into older men. She has perfected a method of cuteness called the “Viola Method” which helps everyone but her ironically. The Duke and Alice go skating, there the Duke meets a talking bird. Turns out it’s Cuff’s friend, Zain. He can’t help but ogle Alice. Zain and Cuff offer to take the Duke to the sabbath of the witches so he can hopefully learn something about his curse.

Our Take:

The characters make a show in most cases for me and the characters in The Duke of Death and His Maid are fantastic. We get introduced to a new character this week, Cuff’s childhood friend, Zain. I really liked Zain except that he was staring at Alice too much. She and the Duke belong together so he needs to back off. Besides, he has Cuff who is clearly in love with him and I would imagine there are some feelings on his end as well.

Speaking of Zain, he is voiced by the amazing Ricco Fajardo. He does a lot of great work, I really like him as Mirio Togata in My Hero Academia. Zain seems like an interesting character and right in Ricco’s wheelhouse. I’m not a HUGE fan of womanizer characters usually but we will see how Zain pans out. He can womanize all he wants but he just needs to leave Alice alone!

I had a feeling Cuff and Zain would be important characters because of their status as magic users. If the Duke wants to learn anything about his curse they seem the most likely to help him find out. Turns out they will take him to something called the sabbath of the witches, which I imagine will be something we see next episode. I just hope we get some progress on the curse front cause I really feel bad for the Duke.

I do like the “grass is always greener” mentality we see from both the Duke and Cuff. The Duke just wishes he could touch Alice the way that Zain can touch Cuff. Meanwhile, Zain is envious of how open Alice and the Duke are with their feelings. Just goes to show you that nothing in relationships is perfect and they take a lot of work.
