English Dub Review: Sakugan “GOOD DAY, GOOD BYE”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Memempu deciphers the pendant sent by Urorop, revealing it to be a detailed map of the Labyrinth. But before she can head out, a kaiju attacks Pinyin. Her father Gagumber activates a bot he’s hidden in the warehouse district, and they face down against the kaiju together.

Our Take:

So the mech that Memempu and Gagumber have is way more unique than the others. It looks like it has a face and looks kind of cute, to be honest. It can even transform into some kind of car mode and it just looks cool to me. The mech action was really seamless and blended in with the rest of the show well.

Even the kaiju have a unique spin on them. I don’t quite grasp all of it yet but they constantly are attached to the ground with cables or something. If those are severed the kaiju dries up and dies, Gagumber thought if they severed their own cables they would die too. But that didn’t happen this time at least as they kept coming after them even after severing their own cables. I still have a lot of questions but it’s pretty cool and the kaiju look unique.

While watching this I’m reminded a lot of Gurren Lagann, let’s hope this ends better though. It’s mostly the world, the fact that the mech has a drill mode, and the art style is similar.  I wonder if it will get as “out there” as that show did, because if so we are in for a wild ride. But if you haven’t seen Gurren Lagann and like what you’ve seen so far from Sakugan then there is a good recommendation for you.

Crunchyroll has been pretty good about getting their dubs out weekly. Theirs tend to start a little later than Funimations but have been more consistent once they do start. So I think we can look forward to this one weekly. It’s really fun so far and I like the world-building. The only part that was a little weird to me was Memepu asking Gagumber if he had lost someone before. Since he’s her dad and there doesn’t seem to be a mom around anywhere I figured that would be an obvious yes. But Gagumber didn’t seem to mention anyone at all. Maybe that will be a question to get answered in a later episode or perhaps she’s adopted and I just didn’t notice that earlier.
