English Dub Review: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X “My Graduation Ceremony Happened…”
Overview
Catarina Claes is finally graduating from the Magic Academy. Catarina reflects on the past two years as she talks with all of her precious friends and attends a graduation party at the castle. There, they all speak of their feelings for her, starting with Geordo…
Our Take
It feels weird that the cast only had their time within the magic academy for two years before graduating rather than the three that a lot of us viewers are used to with storylines involving Japanese high schools. But regardless, the graduation party was a nice one. It was also a reminder of how much of a glutton Catarina is which is of course played for laughs.
Given that this is supposedly an adaptation of a Manga, The author clearly is taking the lazy way out that Tite Kubo did with his creation “Bleach”. As he doesn’t seem to know how to advance the plot without kidnappings as this time around involved about 5 episodes with kidnapped people which keeps me from giving this a higher rating because outside of Keith’s storyline, there were no actual stakes.
Overall, a good final episode for season 2, and a nice graduation party as it manages to give Catarina a good moment with each main member of the harem. Honestly, It’s watchable, but man does it become incredibly boring once the Dark Magic plot-line is brought up. Not to mention the same uninspiring “kidnapping” arc has already been used three times and two of them in the same season.
Short of getting Roiland back, which I'm sure isn't going to happen, I don't even think they could get much better than the new voices from the previous season. And the ratings for season 7 weren't much lower on average than for season 6; it was pretty much just a normal season-to-season drop that most likely would have happened regardless.
I mean, look at the actual averages:
Season 1 - 1.57 million viewers Season 2 - 1.97 million viewers Season 3 - 2.33 million viewers Season 4 - 1.52 million viewers Season 5 - 0.96 million viewers Season 6 - 0.56 million viewers Season 7 - 0.42 million viewers
Ever since season 3, it had been having steep drops even with Roiland still involved; the season 6 to 7 drop is actually the smallest-percentage drop it's had since it started dropping, and if anything it's possible that changing the voice actors actually *boosted* interest a bit and prevented it from dropping even more.
