English Dub Review: Strike Witches – World Witches Take Off! Episodes 9-10

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The 501st try getting Sanya in their doctumentary, while the 502nd try to get supplies when they’re snowed in and some of their own are sick.

OUR TAKE

Well, just like with the finale of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, Funimation tried to slip Episode 9 of World Witches under the rug, but I guess realized their mistake and made sure everyone was aware of Episode 10. So now, I get to use two episodes worth of material to fit into 400 words instead of just one! This is definitely special for me since I get to cover an episode about both teams each for once, which also means I get to compare them much more directly in terms of comedy and how their character dynamics work! I mean, I still have very little familiarity with the Brave Witches, but hopefully that doesn’t really matter for this instance. Anyway, the first half focuses on the Strike Witches using Sanya in their documentary, which I remember being covered a couple episodes ago but not to this extent. In this case, they’re pretending to put her into combat and even faking a death scene for her, much to most of the other members’ dismay. This was probably the funniest episode of this comedy spin-off series so far, even if I never quite got to an actual laugh. It was there on the tip of my throat, I swear to god.

The other is more limited since it involves the group going to get supplies for a sick comrade since the Brave Witches recently moved to a colder location to train. While the last time they were the focus was pretty chuckle worthy and got some tasteful fanservice in, it’s still pretty low on having many actual solid jokes, and sadly this episode is no exception. The best they had to offer would probably being one of their older officers being nineteen years old but still getting carded for buying alcohol (here the age to drink is eighteen supposedly). I know plenty of my younger looking friends can probably relate to this feeling even if they’re well into their mid twenties, but it’s a small somewhat funny bit in a sea of mediocrity and cringing. Now that we’re down to the final two episodes, we’ll be getting our last check ins with each team. That is, unless we’re finally going to see the World Witches take off as the previews have been hinting at and get the two teams together for some big mission. Or even a barbeque would be pretty neat.
