English Dub Review: You and I Are Polar Opposites “Threshold of Spring”
Overview:
When Taira hears that Yamada has a girlfriend, he’s able to offer his honest congratulations. Later, in the middle of a conversation, Taira is assailed by his past trauma. After the last day of the school year, Taira and Azuma head to a local restaurant together. Azuma realizes that she doesn’t want to lose her connection to Taira as she, along with everyone else, prepares to face the new season.
Our Take(Spoilers):
Alright, we have some major things happening, but I’m gonna hit on the minor things first. Minor might be a mean thing to say, but you all know how much I’ve been looking forward to the potential of Azuma and Taira. Nishi and Yamada are officially a couple now, and everyone at school knows it as well. Taira has come a long way because he was able to legitimately congratulate Yamada.
I don’t think I’ve ever related to a character as much as I’ve related to Taira in this episode. I’ve had my laugh made fun of multiple times throughout my life. I also don’t have the greatest teeth, so I tend to cover my mouth when I laugh around people I don’t know. Taira was told that he has a creepy laugh, so he’s spent his life learning to laugh more quietly and covering his mouth when he laughs. It made me feel bad, but it also made the payoff that happened later even better.
It’s the end of the school year in Japan, and now everyone is going to become third years. Yamada managed to pass his tests; it would have been weird if Nishi was suddenly a grade above him. Nobody knows if they’re going to be in the same class when the next semester rolls around. This is part of why I think Azuma wanted to spend a little more time with Taira.
After Taira and Azuma got off the train, Azuma wasn’t ready for the time spent together to be over. They went to a restaurant together, and this is where things start to go the way I’m hoping. Once their “date” is over, Azuma asks Taira to still be open with her even if they’re not in close classes or anything.
Azuma starts to question things like how Taira isn’t normally the type of guy that she’d go for. But it looked to me like she started to realize she might be catching feelings for him. This part of the equation was never a question for me. But will we start to see Taira realize he has feelings for her? It’s obvious she’s helped him get out of his shell, but I hope we get a little more focus on them coming up.
