English Dub Review: Getter Robo Arc “The Chosen Children”

Overview:

The past helps the present by giving them a way to defeat the monster insects that are invading. The monsters are after Getter Dragon and their queen. Takuma and the guys get some weapons from the professor. He offers a lot of interesting options but they go with more practical choices. In fact, Takuma chooses the same handgun his father used. To destroy the insects the “Cauldron of Hell” needs to be opened which is concentrated Getter Rays. These can kill Kamui so they have to be fast!

Our Take:

This episode was really hard to follow, a lot of times I couldn’t tell what was going on. One minute everyone was loading up on weapons to fight the monsters and the next they were in the Getter. It seemed like they were in the past at the end of the last episode but they were in the present and everything was normal at the beginning of this one. It felt very disjointed and when you’re already telling a convoluted sci-fi story that doesn’t help your case.

The animation is still holding up and the Getter Arc is one of the cooler mech designs I’ve seen. I love how it has different forms and we got to see one in this episode. This form seems to be the Kamui-led one and seems to be used for drilling. Seeing the Arc in action each week is really cool and I love the fight scenes. I love the Arc so much I might get one of the model kits. It’s super old school but also reminds me of the EVA’s from Evangelion and I love those.

I am liking this show but the mindless action can only carry something for so long. As much as I love Takuma’s curse-filled yelling at the enemies, it will get old soon without more plot. I am hoping the next few episodes introduce a bigger plot and maybe some more characters. Now that everyone is kind of in the groove of piloting it makes sense to up the stakes. With the monster invasion of the lab being resolved I guess we will see what they have in store for us next week.
