English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What Is This Pain?”

Overview:

Yume’s sister might have been getting bullied which led to her possible suicide. Koyomi spends time with Inamoto again but this time her husband shows up. He drowns his sorrows drinking with Mujina, who takes his Dyna Striker. No one is in the right mindset to fight the kaiju that shows up. Mujina seems to be a completely different person after dominating the kaiju. All seems lost till a giant hero steps in to save the day?

Our Take:

Well, I will admit when I’m wrong. I really thought Inamoto wasn’t married but then the guy shows up. Not only that but he was kind of a douche, but like… a nice douche? Which is the worst kind in my opinion, when people can make treating you like crap seem nice that’s the worst. He dominated the conversation, never letting Koyomi talk, and kept calling him by the wrong name. I think the worst part of it was that it was relatable, I’m sure we have all been in a situation like that.

Alas, when old love fades it makes way for something new. Or that is what I thought and would like to think but now I am not so sure. Right after his disaster dinner with Inamoto, Koyomi runs into the Kaiju Eugenicist Mujina. They drank together and were getting along really well. I thought a new ship might have been sailing but I am going to think that might not be the case. Something tells me if someone steals your part of a mega zord that a relationship is gonna be hard. I know it would be for me anyways but who knows.

This whole episode seemed to be relationship-themed, with Yume and Yomogi having issues as well. I am not the best at reading people but it seemed that Yume was jealous of some girls hanging around Yomogi at his desk. After seeing that she kept being cold and pushing him away but she was also thinking about the video of her sister getting bullied. Perhaps she is worried that is something going with Yomogi but I don’t see why she would be cold if that was the case.

For better or worse, everyone’s issues make kaiju fighting difficult. This show definitely has a Power Rangers feel where there is a lesson that needs to be learned before everyone can fight at their best. Unfortunately for them, things were not working out their way and it looked like they were dead. But then a hero showed up to save them?

This is where I tell you we might be reaching a territory where SSSS. Gridman becomes required viewing. The character that shows up to save them was a pretty major character in that series. The implications this has are really exciting to me so I can’t wait to see what their involvement means. I will definitely let you all know if Gridman becomes necessary viewing but hopefully not and this is just a cool Easter egg situation.
