Recap: Tuca & Bertie Comic-Con@Home 2021 Panel

The Netflix hatchling turned Adult Swim flier gets its first go at Comic-Con after its surprise second season premiered on television. Saved from what was considered an unjust cancellation after only one season on Netflix, Adult Swim surprised many last year by deciding to pick the show up and premiere new episodes on their channel. Now with a few episodes already out for consumption, much of the crew has assembled to discuss how the process went over the hell that was 2020. This panel was moderated by Adam Conover, who hosts Creator/EP Lisa Hanawalt, EP Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and Nicole Byer who guest voices various characters.

The group discussed the respective developments for the title characters, as Tuca pursues a new relationship and Bertie looks internally to deal with a bunch of her own issues, though more importantly are the tomato strippers. Repressed trauma is a key theme of the season, mainly in Bertie. Nicole Byers goes into her process for how she brings so many different voices to her many roles, all coming from people in her own life, and she was even able to record in the studio booth alone without risk of infection. Also notable is that the entire season was written over Zoom meetings, with Lisa and Raphael only getting one chance to meet in person while working on the season before being forced to social distance. The panel wrapped with a sneak preview of the next episode.

Tuca & Bertie airs Sundays on Adult Swim.
