English Dub Review: Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- “Harmony of One’s Heart – My Mission, Your Future”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Diva wakes up tied to a chair by the younger Kakitani. He reveals himself as an AI with all the memories of the human Kakitani and his past with AIs. Kakitani tries to drag Vivy out with the logical bullet’s special program of erasing personalities. Matsumoto arrives and gets Diva out of her constraints. Meanwhile, Matsumoto’s other body is fighting against Antonio who is also remotely controlling his former body.

The duo manages to win against both Antonio and Kakitani. Matsumoto questions Kakitani on the advanced technology he received but they are left with a vague answer before Diva has to sing on stage. Diva performs on stage as she talks with Vivy in the archive about singing with all her heart and their mission. Diva leaves Vivy, in control of their body, opens her eyes, and remarks that she still can’t understand.

Our Take:

Antonio and Ophelia’s tragic love story comes to an end along with Diva’s erasure and Kakitani’s demise. This week’s episode is great from the animation to the voice acting and the soundtrack. I’ll start with the animation because the fight between Kakitani and Diva with Matsumoto was great. Each punch and kick was fluid and I liked how Diva used one of Matsumoto’s chubes like a baseball. The piano breaking as Diva crashes into it was good if not symbolic of Kakitani’s relationship with his piano teacher who we saw at the end of the previous episode. There’s also Matsumoto’s fight with Antonio using electronic warfare. Lastly, there’s Matsumoto disabling Kakitani and that distortion on the screen was a good way to reflect that.

Then there’s Antonio’s extreme unhappiness at the human reactions to Ophelia singing when in truth all he wanted was for her to sing for him alone. It screams love and Ophelia’s words hit the nail on the love birds’ coffin. Their partnership is similar to Vivy and Matsumoto’s thoughts on their missions. However, they differ with how Matsumoto doesn’t completely cut Vivy off after her freeze. While we’re on the subject Matsumoto and Vivy’s dialogue was really impactful in the episode. Matsumoto respects her wish to perform for the sake of her mission despite the erasure of her personality and acknowledges that she’s his equal in terms of their missions. It’s the first time he acknowledged her which makes the moment even more impactful.

Lastly, there’s Diva’s song and her conversation with Vivy in the classroom space. The transition between that and her singing on stage was lovely. Furthermore, there’s her emotional state as she’s singing with the AI circle constantly revealing how her emotional turmoil is with the mix of colors. It was a bittersweet goodbye as Diva fades away and the execution of it was good.

Overall it was a great episode, even though Diva got erased and Vivy is still unsure of what it means to put her heart into her singing. This turning point surely made an impact on the future with Kakitani’s ominous reminder of their actions.
