English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What Is This Thumping Heart?”

Overview:

Yomogi is realizing he has feelings for Yume. A new exchange student comes to their school, turns out its Sizuma of the Kaiju Eugenicists. Yomogi is battling a cold and stays home, but kaiju don’t care if you’re sick and one attacks. Chise attempts to pilot Dyna Soldier in Yomogi’s place but she can’t combine. Yume ends up picking up Yomogi anyways to finish the battle.

Our Take:

Romance might be happening and maybe for multiple characters? I’ve made no secret of my love of romance in anime and I am really excited about the possibilities for this. Yomogi is into Yume, but they kind of touched on romance in Gridman too but not in a satisfying way. The difference here is there is another potential couple with Koyomi and Inamoto. I know she said she was married but I don’t believe that for one second.

We got a little bit of development from Chise this episode. I was wondering how long she would just chill in the background. I mean if I was hanging out with a bunch of people who were piloting a giant robot I wouldn’t be cool with just watching. So when Yomogi got sick I was wondering if she would get tagged in. She didn’t last long but I think she will get another chance. I think Koyomi’s spotlight is coming up next episode. Shows like this depend on the characters and I hope they all get fleshed out.

I am also wondering what the payoff on the mystery surrounding Yume’s sister will be. If we follow Chekov’s Gun it has to be relevant somehow right? Yomogi was feeling a bit jealous and asked to tag along with Yume on the next meeting which was a cute type of jealousy. I hope it doesn’t become cringey jealousy. The person she would meet up with next would be a guy, I am wondering if it will be someone from SSSS. Gridman to link the shows. So far there hasn’t been anything which is good in its own way.

I have been really enjoying Dallas Reid as Yomogi. His most notable role is as Asta in Black Clover and I know that character sometimes rubs people the wrong way. I am telling you though that Dallas is super talented and I really love his portrayal of Yomogi so far. I really hope I am right about the Koyomi spotlight soon cause I love Jason Liebrecht and he hasn’t got to do much.

As I said earlier there isn’t really anything linking this to Gridman… yet. As of right now, it isn’t required viewing but I will definitely update you if that changes. As of now I really recommend this show, it’s been a lot of fun. The characters are interesting and the fights are gorgeous and exciting.
