English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What is a Kaiju User?”
Overview:
Studio Trigger delivers the sequel to 2018’s SSSS. Gridman with SSSS. Dynazenon. When kaiju start attacking the town it’s up to Yomogi and others to form Dynazenon and fight back.
Our Take:
I was a huge fan of SSSS. Gridman so to say I was eager for this is a huge understatement. It’s based on Gridman the Hyper Agent. I never saw that one but I did see the American version, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad or SSSS. It was such a faithful adaption that they even included the SSSS. Alright, that is enough background let’s get the review started!
I mentioned this in my review of Full DIve but some studios just do eyes well and Studio Trigger is another one. Especially in this and Gridman. The characters and their eyes just pop, making you pay attention whenever they’re on screen. The animations in this show are fantastic. When the fights happen it’s definitely obvious that they’re using CGI but it’s done really well. I loved watching the fight in this.
The soundtrack is great as well, with a lot of the sound carrying over from Gridman. We get a preview of what I’m guessing is the opening song during the fight and it’s mixed in perfectly. The monster and robot strikes hit with the necessary “oomph” thanks to the sound design. I don’t think there will be too many complaints in the sound department.
This show kind of feels like Power Rangers if they only did the Zord and monster fights. There are four pieces that makeup Dynazenon and each of the main characters gets a piece of it. The pieces kind of look like toys but I think we will learn more about them as we go.
The characters are interesting so far and I can’t wait to learn more about them. Yomogi Asanaka works a lot, and it seems he wants to leave his home. His mother takes him to dinner with a man that so far I assume is her boyfriend so I am guessing Yomogi doesn’t approve. There’s the mysterious Gauma, who says he’s a kaiju user. Yomogi gives him food when he’s hungry which leads to Gauma trying to find Yomogi to repay him.
There is also Yume Minami, who has apparently been standing guys up left and right. When she asks to meet Yomogi I expected that to happen to him too. It pretty much did but Gauma wins the “Bro of the Year” award by finding her and telling her off right before a kaiju attack. The final main characters are Koyomi Yamanaka and his cousin Chise Asukagawa. We don’t know much about them yet but Koyomi is one of the Dynazenon pilots by chance, or so it seems at the moment.
Luckily we got a second episode today as well so I am going to get on that one but I am definitely looking forward to this series. The characters are interesting and the kaiju fights look good so far. Also, so far it doesn’t seem like SSSS. Gridman is necessary viewing but that could change and I will definitely let you know!
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
