English Dub Review: Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki “A single choice can change everything”

Overview

In the middle of the night, Aoi Hinami asks Fumiya Fumiya to meet with her privately to check up on his progress. He tells her that he interacted with Nakamura three times to clear the task. But before they could continue their conversation, Mizusawa comes in and Fumiya hides. Mizusawa confesses his love for Hinami leading to an awkward reaction from Fumiya.

The next day, the trip ends with everybody returning home. On the day of the summer festival, Fumiya goes out on a date with Fūka as planned. While the date goes off without any problems, Fumiya fails to confess his love to her, as Hinami had ordered him to do…

Our Take

Finally, Fumiya has woken up from what Hinami was putting him through and he’s totally right. Hinami was giving him goals and challenges, without even considering the feelings of the other parties involved. I would personally hate it if someone would come up to me, say they like me, while it was set up by someone else to do so. I am glad Fumiya realized that in time without hurting Kikuchi’s feelings. That could have been really messy.

Aoi has been really good for Fumiya and he definitely needed to change, but this episode really makes you realize that Aoi may have had ulterior motives behind just giving Fumiya the desired makeover he wanted. Whatever her motivations, she was super condescending to him. At first, it did help him, with social interaction, but sooner or later, whatever routine Aoi instilled in him, he has drop the act at some point. This isn’t some sappy rom-com where you know you’re in love immediately. Sure he likes Fuuka. But does he know whether or not he’s ready to seriously confess to her? No, because they’ve been on two dates.

Overall, I think this was one of the better episodes on the whole, with the “student surpassing the teacher” with Fumiya coming to his senses and realizing that treating real-life people like game characters is wrong. Oh, and Where do I even begin with Aoi? I thought she would actually be happier that he was beginning to make his own decisions and basing his actions on what he thought was right. I am hoping for a great finale next week. As Fumiya really took a stand for his beliefs this episode against Aoi’s “Put on a fake mask” philosophy, but I really hope that something positive could be salvaged from this…
