Review: Final Space “The Devil’s Den”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Gary, HUE, and Avocato pursue Little Cato and Ash in a new ship, taking them directly in front of Invictus. The Lord Commander arrives to face Invictus directly, giving them a chance to escape while Quinn finds a way to restart the portal out of Final Space with the help of Tribore and a hidden message in Nightfall’s helmet. Ash keeps the Galaxy Two from leaving, forcing Mooncake to fight her off, but she absorbs his powers and transfers them to Invictus, who is finally able to escape Final Space.

OUR TAKE

And with that shocking cliffhanger ending, we close the book on Season 3 of Final Space. Our heroes have finally made it out of that horrible dimension (curing their nearly fatal conditions), but with secrets laid bare, two of their own dead, one captured, and another turning traitor, all as the greatest evil they have ever faced is now free to consume their universe. They are truly facing their darkest hour.

Boy, it sure would suck if the show got cancelled after all that, wouldn’t it?

Now, I haven’t exactly made it a secret that I have not been a huge friend of the some of the subplots this season, particularly the Avocato parent drama, Ash’s beef with Gary despite him doing nothing wrong, Quinn’s sudden identity issues over possibly becoming Nightfall, and just Invictus and Lord Commander in general. Well, this being the season finale, pretty much all of that is paid off or resolved, so as much as I had to squirm a bit with them putting all these parts of the season I didn’t really appreciate so close together all at once, I could at least see what they were going for with all of them, even if I didn’t necessarily agree.

The “I’m not your real father but I raised you so I kinda am your real father” plot is still really overplayed and predictable unless they really try to go a different direction with it. Ash being controlled by Invictus the way that she’s been doesn’t tell me much about her core beliefs and how Invictus appeals to them and only says that she’s just easily controlled, so I’m not really looking forward to seeing more of her as a bad guy. Lord Commander’s betrayal and power up seemed to amount to just a brief distraction, so that felt like a waste. And this sudden push that Nightfall is just an inevitable evolution that Quinn just HAS to go through seems to throw out the free will you’d think a story that includes multiple timelines would want to endorse.

But damn, I really want to see what comes next. I have no idea how Tribore was able to get out of Final Space first but maybe he can actually be of use for once and help Quinn pull together the scattered forces of the Infinity Guard. Perhaps Invictus will gather a bunch of apostles that also absorbed his power like Ash did and we can see a whole Legion of Doom of Titan-powered baddies for Ash to bounce off of. Even if I wasn’t keen on it, we could learn more about Little Cato’s family and possibly see a resurgence of the Ventrexian race as he takes his rightful place leading them, all to finally avenge his race against the Lord Commander and Invictus. Speaking of, maybe we could finally figure out WHY Evil David Tennant got so power hungry in the first place! And Gary? Well…I’m sure there’s something he could do to contribute. But we’re not going to get any of that if the story can’t go on for at least one more season. We’ll be looking back on this one in the Season Review, but hopefully there’s enough fan love out there that will power the lightfold engines one more time.
