English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “A Lovely Demoness”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

With Ameri having been changed by the effects of the spell, productivity with the council goes way down. So much that a chief rival, Ronove Romiere (who is also the main suspect), challenges the student council to a sudden election. The spell turning Ameri submissive is nearly undone but they still don’t know why it’s been effecting her or who has done it.

OUR TAKE

We continue with the Demon Student Council focused arc by seeing how Ameri’s sudden change in demeanor severely impacts the iron grip on the school she had held all this time. She’s still super cute, but without the fire in her to rule over them with a flaming demon fist, it puts all that she’s worked for in danger. It also shouldn’t be a huge spoiler that Ronove is not the actual culprit. For one, while he is the prime suspect for a reason, that reason being that he’s been trying to take over the council for awhile and still decides to go through with what is essentially a recall despite his opponent still basically being incapacitated, he’s too flashy to be capable of this level of subterfuge. In these sorts of mysteries, its customary to show the seemingly obvious choice of the culprit ahead of time to distract from the actual more subtle choice who actually did it. As for who really did it, well, we don’t quite know yet. They’re not going to be revealed until the last moment and it’s not really anyone we’ve seen yet. But that’s okay because this isn’t really about WHO turned Ameri into this version of herself, but rather how it is effecting her and those around her.

As we’ve seen, she is very much the lynch pin of her council’s operations, and with her in this more demure state, they are nearly unable to get much of anything done, helped only by Iruma already being a hard worker and managing to multi task. But we’ve also already seen that Ameri is a bit self conscious of her more forward and domineering nature, even before being changed in this way, so if there was any reason the effects of it might still be lingering, it’s probably because of that. Over the course of her time with Iruma last season, it’s clear she’s been developing feelings for him, but now it could be that she’s wondering if she’s been “lady like enough” to draw his eye. It’s a typical worry of characters like this, even if their fiery leadership style might be what attracted their respective love interests in the first place. Next week, we’ll see the arc conclude and our culprit found, as well as a major step forward in the romance between Iruma and Ameri. Though we’ll see if that goes much of anywhere for the rest of the season.
