English Dub Review: Strike Witches – Road to Berlin “They Go Boing-Boing”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

After a failed mission, the 501st find a strange idol used by ancient witches that gives everyone on the team huge boobs and possesses them.

OUR TAKE

When I first saw this episode, I have to admit that I thought it was mainly there to pad out the season to make it look and feel like a juicy, bouncy, full set of twelve episodes. But upon groping around in it some more, I think I’ve come to find that this sort of detour is absolutely natural in many anime seasons. Having a kind of zombie episode in the middle of the story doesn’t always need to go straight for the jugs-ular, but really only has to grab on with both hands and learn to have fun with what its mama gave it. And by mama, I of course mean the many other anime which gave it these influences. It’s also notable that Yoshika has been established to have quite the mammary mania in previous seasons, and given the focus on bonkers bozangas and the supernatural nature of the possession, one of my first assumptions about how this would play out was that this was some sort of dream. That turned out not to be the case, raising some questions about this world, but I had to can those as I decided to just hang on and go with the fun.

Let’s be honest, this series isn’t going to be winning any Golden Globes, nor is it intending to. The goal of this kind of story is just like being in a bouncy castle; it’s meant to be about having fun. Now that we’re in the summer months and the world is opening up, you should be able to do things like throw water balloons, eat some melons, flip some pancakes, drink some milkshakes, you know stuff like that. That may catch some people like a deer in headlights, but there’s no reason this concept should have you going coconuts. If you obsess over things being so serious, you’re likely to give yourself chesticular cancer. So, unless you’re sense of humor is as flat as a board, you should find something to like about this episode. It’s not the titty twister that other shows may be at in the middle of their seasons, but it doesn’t need to be. Well, I think I’ve filled out the word count on this review quite nicely, so it’s ta-tas for me for now. Next week is another episode about a nice pair of characters, so we’ll see if that one sags or not.
