English Dub Review: I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level: “We Went to a Dragon’s Wedding”

Overview: Laika (Rachelle Heger) takes Azusa (Skyler Davenport), Falfa (Lizzie Freeman), Shalsha (Suzie Yeung) and Halkara (Xanthe Huynh) to her older sister’s wedding, but things go off the rails when the rival blue dragons crash the party.

Our Take: I’ve Been Killing Slimes, while not very deep or complex, knows what kind of show it is and it just wants to have a good time. It is not a fine wine tasting soiree but a beer pong party. This becomes more and more evident with each passing episode that Maxed Out My Level fully embraces how tongue and cheek all the shenanigans the Aizawa and her family get up to. This time around, as the vague episode title implies, the whole gang go to a Dragon wedding, specifically Laika’s older sister’s.

Then, not so subtly winking and nodding, Aizawa realizes the Red dragons jinxed themselves by thinking they would be attacked by the warring blue dragons so therefore they are and the party is crashed because why not. And that is what I mean by it is far more concerned with putting a smile on your face like making silly somewhat fourth wall breaking jokes more than anything else and for that I commend it, because mission accomplished. After all, it may be ridiculous, but dragons throwing hands (or fire breath) over petty jealousy over a blue dragon not getting married before a red one is nothing if not comically fun and goofy.

And wouldn’t you know it, it actually has a kickass scene in this episode. The animation has had quick bursts of quality every now and then but this is the best one thus far. Azusa going to town and laying out dragons left and right, especially with her showing off her insane slime slaying gains and magic was just pure fun from start to finish mostly because she always tries to stay away from conflict so seeing her embrace it for once was a treat indeed. Granted it was spurred on by run of the mill family values and all that but nonetheless had me entertained. That is truly the whole episode in a nutshell. While not revolutionary in concept, at the very least there are heartwarming scenes throughout with Laika finding an older sister that will look out for her in Aizawa or Azusa deserving more members of her newfound family. For every cliché, there is a sweet adorable scene and funny joke around the corner. And maybe if we are lucky a cool fight will be thrown in too.

While it is nothing that has not been done before and done better might I add, “We Went to a Dragon’s Wedding” has enough lighthearted antics, charming humor, short but sweet fights and touching character moments to pack a punch.
