English Dub Review: Mars Red “Persona Non Grata”

Overview:

Aoi visits Maeda in the hospital. Our vampire group is already being disbanded, and there seems to be some vampire on vampire violence. Askra seems to have some potentially deadly side effects.

Our Take:

Well if you had money on Kurusu being Aoi’s childhood friend you win. She spoke of him right in front of Maeda which I thought was an interesting touch. He never betrayed that he knew Kurusu and even told her that she should have received a notice that he was dead. She refuses to believe that he is dead because he promised her that he wouldn’t die. Get yourself a childhood friend like Aoi.

Hopefully, that relationship and more of Kurusu gets explored. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening soon it seems. Our vampire group is getting disbanded and I think the government wants them disposed of as well. Hence the title of the episode really fits with the theme this time. There is a new squad of vampire soldiers and they are heavily equipped. If you have ever seen Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade they look very similar to the soldiers in that.

One thing I learned is that when it comes to a fight I want Kurusu or Suwa to be there. They were slicing through vampires with ease while Yamagami and Takeuchi kept having trouble. When all the slicing and fighting was going on the animation was really on point. I don’t know how to describe this show’s animation style but it’s really unique and I think it stands out.

I really wish more people would watch this show but the spring anime season is loaded so I kind of get it. We only have so much time after all but if you are looking for a spring show to add to your lineup You should definitely consider this one.

Mars Red has unique characters, excellent voice acting, and really impressive visuals. We are only five episodes in so it wouldn’t take all that long to get caught up and I really think this show is worth the time. I know vampires have been kind of played out but this is probably the most unique take on them since Shiki which is an excellent horror anime with vampires. Just give this show the three-episode try and you won’t be disappointed.
