English Dub Review: Black Clover “To Tomorrow!”

Overview

The Magic Knight Entrance Exam comes again, marking one year since Asta and Noelle joined the Bulls. Asta is once again swarmed by the Anti-birds for having zero magic. Noelle meets Nozel who is proud she has improved so much, just like their mother. She thanks him for placing her with the Bulls where she made so many friends. Noelle and Asta reminisce about Asta managing to join the Bulls despite his terrible exam performance…


Our Take

For a while, I was getting tired of the random filler episodes, but this recap episode was a reminder of how far the show has come and how hard the animation team has worked in recent years. It’s nostalgic for all the recap they did and especially because they showed us the great development that the characters we’ve had throughout the series and it serves as an introduction to what is to come.

Despite how many years the manga and by-extension the show’s been around, It’s revealed that within their timeline it’s to them a 1-year anniversary that’s commemorated with Asta and Noelle first joining the Black Bulls. And you’d think with the recent revelations about Megicula’s ties with the Silva family and what really happened to Noelle’s mother, Noelle would want to punch Nozel for withholding this information for so long that’s made her an outcast to her own family, but that’s assuming the writer will even touch upon that in later storylines.

Overall, sometimes you need a reminder of how far we the audience have been on this journey with Asta and company together. With every bad character moment, there are at least a few moments where the show manages to get better. Noelle, Asta, and Yuno have come so far. And with a rumored “time-skip” coming up in later episodes, it remains to be seen how far they’ll grow up and progress or if we’ll eventually get an ending for these characters that ties up all the loose ends. But as long as the rabid fanbase keeps buying & reading the manga, that won’t be anytime soon…
