Review: The Summoner “The Gym” ; “Bar Fight”

This week’s dual episodes of The Summoner on Syfy all focus on just how frail Rory is. Like, almost too frail. Obviously it’s in the guise of Rory attempting to woo Shannon and in this go round we see Rory go to the gym in an attempt to get buff, only to learn that Shannon’s more of an intellect. Rory then attempts to start a bar fight to show how strong he really is, only to find out that the only reason Shannon is even at the bar is for a fundraiser.

As the series goes on, The Summoner is less about the title character. In fact, both shorts offer really nothing more than a cameo. The real heart of the series is coming by way of Rory and Shannon’s cat and mouse game that may, or may not, resolve. A classic, romantic tale of a dopey young guy trying to get the girl of his dreams. Because of this, we’re getting an increased compatibility in Rory voice Charlie Hankin and Shannon voice Cree Summer playing off of each other and the comfort level being ever more so visible between the two. The ride is an enjoyable one, even if it means we usually leave The Summoner off to the side more often than not.
