English Dub Review: Black Clover “The Maidens’ Challenge”

“I got the hook-up, holla if ya hear me!”

Overview

Grey decides to overcome her chronic shyness and asks Noelle for help. Elsewhere, Captain Charlotte realizes most of the Blue Roses have boyfriends, yet she hasn’t spoken to Yami in weeks. The Roses advise that since they might die fighting in the Spade Kingdom she should confess to Yami soon. The Wizard King makes a public announcement that he hopes will benefit all the Captains within the Clover Kingdom…



Our Take

This felt like a random episode that attempted to have a lot of personality. Grey feels like a character that’s easy to overlook until the plot demands her to be noticed. Charlotte’s scenes were as predictable as they can get with her inability to even confess to the dense Yami which is seemingly both a recurring and infuriating gag that never seems to die (like most of the unrequited romances of this show).

At first, I thought Wizard King’s announcement was leading to a tournament arc, like a Magic Knight cup or something, but I feel like that might require too many episodes for the people who just wanna get to the damn “Megicula” storyline which this show has built up to for the past two years at this point. But at least what he’s proposing the Captains sort of makes sense from a narrative standpoint.

While the show manages to reach the 150th episode and should’ve been a milestone, It doesn’t do anything spectacular to commemorate such an achievement and feels like a waste of our very important time. We do get some screentime/development with Grey who’s at least trying to improve herself for the team, and the girls of Blue Rose rooting for Charlotte to get with Yami (good luck with that). I don’t know why the show keeps hitting us with actual filler while the Devil Banisher/Bringer Arcs had more substance compared to this. Let’s hope What the Wizard King proposes actually leads to the real plot we’re all waiting for…
