English Dub Review: Black Clover “Clash! The Battle of the Magic Knights Squad Captains”

Overview

As it turns out, a small tournament is held by the Wizard King between Squad Captains of the Clover Kingdom as the Captains are split into two teams; Yami, Jack, Nozel, and Kaiser against Charlotte, Fuegoleon, Dorothy, and Vangeance, aiming to destroy the other team’s crystals, though Rill is absent for personal reasons. Jack and Yami chase after Charlotte, Vangeance, and their crystal while Nozel and Kaiser defend their crystal against Fuegoleon…


Our Take

Hell of an episode this week. I think a lot of people like me have been waiting to finally see all the captains showing off their combat skills. This episode caught me off guard in a good way as I didn’t expect it to have so much action compared to the previous two episodes that were just pointless filler.

This was actually fun to watch for once. The only problem I had was that Charlotte did very little, and right now it seems like she’s the weakest captain by quite a margin. My personal highlight was definitely Yami’s Dimension Cutter. Funny enough that it was too powerful to the point that it had hilarious consequences.

Overall, this was a surprising episode that just when you think the filler episodes are gonna bore us to death with painfully dull, unwatchable, and pointless unrequited romance bullshit that has no place in the narrative. All of a sudden, they bitch slap you with some action to wake up its audience and remind people why we give a shit about these characters when they’re in the face of mortal danger. Hopefully, the purpose of this tournament was to see what everyone within the Clover Kingdom has to offer in preparation for their upcoming Megicula battle which hopefully they’ll get to at some point, but given how much this show likes to drag things, I’m not holding my breath…
