Comic Review: Rick and Morty: World’s Apart #3

Overview:

The Slut Dragons race to find the magical toy that will save them from the Soul Swallow. The great dragon leader, Balthrowmaw is too exhausted from the travels to face the trials to be awarded the great beads. Thankfully, the weight is not going to fall on Morty this time as he brought his other grandfather, Leonard.

Meanwhile, Rick’s pocket universe has been at war with the fascist Teddy Rick. But both are unaware that they are about to be overthrown by their own creations. Together, they wake up to discover that the universe they planned to control has gone on for thousands of years without them.

Our Take:

Since the end of the ongoing self-titled Rick and Morty comic books, there have been plenty of mini-series and one-shots to keep fans appeased. Although, the quality of the books we have seen has been hit-and-miss. At times, Rick and Morty can deliver some of the strongest comics on the shelves. At other times, they are messy works that hardly have any ties to the universe aside from character names.

Rick and Morty: World’s Apart is redefining what an adaptation comic book can look like. Bringing back much of the glory that the self-titled run achieved. And it is doing it while delivering two stories inside of one miniseries, with the titular characters facing their own dilemmas a universe away from one another. Both plots delivering more for fans than other runs could achieve in one.

Morty has become the star of his own adventure. New characters intermix with old with appearances from the Slut Dragons and grandpa Leonard. But Morty is stuck in the middle of a fantasy epic as his former friend, Balthrowmaw faces extinction. This issue continues on the horny adventure with more innuendos and dirty puns. And takes it over the top with Leonard facing the erotic trials to win the prize the slut dragons need to win this war.

A world away, in the pocket universe of Rick’s creation, time moves much more swiftly. In the previous issues, we have already seen the formation of a solar system and the rise of two duelling societies. And now it is followed up with the mad geniuses being usurped by their most loyal followers. And as the two former tyrants awake from being trapped for thousands of years, their revenge is sure to be swift.

Two epic tales for the price of one. And we have not even reached the climax yet.

The amount that they have packed into these first three issues is incredible. If only every comic could be this ambitious when it comes to telling a story. There is still one more issue to come out of this mini-series and based on the amount of story left to wrap up, it is going to be a big one. But already this is going to be a series that stands out in a comic franchise that is packed with great stories.
