English Dub Review: Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? “Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town?”

Overview:

Lloyd Belladonna (Erica Shroeder) comes from the village of Kunlun, this village just so happens to be located near the Final Dungeon AKA the most dangerous place on Earth. What would count as monsters for the average person is just typical wildlife for the denizens of Kunlun. Everyone here is overpowered Lloyd however is considered the runt and is often made fun of for not being as strong as everyone else.

Lloyd decides to go to the capital city in the Azami Kingdom and attempt to become a soldier. He decides to stay with and (hopefully) become the ward of the Witch of the East End, Marie (Krystal LaPorte). From here he meets some wacky characters which brings about some comedic hijinks.

Our Take:

I feel like with anime based on Light Novels we either get something that makes us think it’s about something worse than it is (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas). Or we get something that tries to pose a question that the show will hopefully answer (World End: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?) which is the camp this falls into. So, what would happen if a kid from the last dungeon boonies moved to a starter town? We get this comedy about an overpowered protagonist apparently.

I have watched a lot of anime with overpowered protagonists and personally, I still love it. It’s an easy power fantasy to fall back on but here we at least have a bit of a twist to it. You see Lloyd is painfully oblivious to how strong he really is, one of the few things he considers a monster is a demon lord. You know, end of the world, final boss types of threats. He ran from his hometown of Kunlun to the capital in just a few days, which was essentially one end of the map to another. Some of the most advanced rune magic he just uses to clean everyday items. Our boy really doesn’t know any better.

I was really surprised when they released the cast list for this because they got some heavy hitters in the industry and a few of my personal favorites. Billy Kametz and Alexis Tipton are two of my favorites and to see that they are voicing recurring characters was a joy (Alan and Selen respectively). Lloyd is voiced by Erica Shroeder who, while not a newcomer, hasn’t had a lead role from what I could find. She has voiced a lot of your favorite Pokemon though! We also got Krystal LaPorte, Lindsay Sheppard, Elizabeth Maxwell, Doug Erholtz, Jad Saxton, and David Matranga to round out the cast. Selen’s yandere tendencies could give Alexis one of her more unique roles since voicing Hana in Prison School.

As is normal for my first episode rule “Does it leave me wanting more?” and that answer is yes. We get to see just enough of Lloyd’s abilities that it leaves us wanting more. I had watched the sub when it first aired and still laughed at a lot of the gags, that’s how good the comedy is. Plus there was no quality lost between the English and Japanese versions, Krystal LaPorte nailed Marie’s feelings and outbursts because of the “Loli Grandma” Alka perfectly from her sub counterpart. So if you have been waiting on the dub for this to start it, get going!
