Comic Review: Rick and Morty: Worlds Apart #2

Overview:

Morty and his grandfather, Leonard, have joined Balthrowmaw in a last-ditch effort to save the Slut Dragons from extinction.  Unfortunately, they have found themselves within Lady Finndom’s trap.  At the cost of an old ally, Balthrowmaw and company make for their last hope, the Ultimate Weapon of the Slut Dragons.

Meanwhile, Rick’s much-needed vacation has been interrupted.  Planning on spending the weekend in a pocket universe that he can bend to his will, Rick must now share with his old enemy, Teddy Rick.  However, when their societies rise in two different directions, Rick is approached to help the citizens of the other side.

Our Take:

The title of this mini-series is beginning to make much more sense, as the two titular characters endure wildly different adventures across the universe from one another.  Not only, are Morty and Rick on different planets, but their plots also could not be farther apart.  As Rick enjoys the leisure of a science fiction epic, Morty is flying through a fantasy world full of Slut Dragons.

Of course, this was all well-established in the first issue of Rick and Morty: Worlds Apart.  With the arrival of Morty’s paternal grandfather, Leonard, Rick was quick to head out on his own.  Leaving Morty to face a grand adventure with Balthrowmaw and his less lovable grandparent.

This issue kicks off Rick, as he is rudely interrupted from enjoying his pocket universe by old rival Teddy Rick.  For those that do not recall, Teddy Rick is just as he sounds, but the adorable plush happens to be quite the fascist.  Leading the first pages of this comic to be a throwdown between these geniuses, as a universe is forming around them.

Thankfully, the Ricks come to an agreement to divide the pocket universe in half and promising not to bother in each others business.  Though Rick’s thriving society of mutated Mortys is a direct conflict to the totalitarian land of Teddy Rick.  And while Rick can easily ignore bad things happening, he usually finds himself involved by happenstance.  This time being Teddy’s infiltration of the societies porn industry.  Setting up what is sure to be a world-destroying war.

Meanwhile, Morty’s sympathetic nature has found him involved in the fate of the Slut Dragons.  As the ancient beings battle it out with the evil Lady Finndom and her Soul Swallower amulet.  With much of this plot established in the first issue, not much unfolds here.  Besides discovering the Slut Dragons last hope in finding their ultimate weapon.

And, of course, lots of weird sexual innuendos.

Many of these Rick and Morty mini-series comic books have had some great epics.  And some have been less entertaining than others.  But Rick and Morty: World’s Apart is offering two great adventures for the price of one.

Though this particular issue had a lot of setting up to do, it is laying the groundwork for something major.  Whether or not Morty and Rick’s stories cross path no longer matters.  There are much larger things to deal with like the fate of a horny dragon species, and the sanctity of Rick’s newfound society.  This series is about to get explosive.
