English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “Days of Play”

Overview

At the Yamada Sanatorium, Youta observes Hina’s daily routine. He then does his report for the day. When he heads back to Hina’s room, Youta reveals that he is permitted to spend an hour with her. However, she rejects him. While they are alone, Dr. Shiba tells Youta that he has to look at Hina in the eye before he can gain her trust. When they meet up again, she tells him that Hina might have lost her memories following the surgery…



Our Take

Pretty nice episode for the week, though Youta in the first half was frustrating to watch. I feel like Youta is being far too insensitive despite knowing that Hina is clearly traumatized from a surgery that may have sort-of lobotomized her. Not to mention he’s actually faking his identity as a professional in order to reach her. Right now, Dr. Shiba who’s currently in charge of her case is a much better caretaker for Hina and knows she’s a girl with special needs yet Youta kept forcing stuff on her.

It would do him so much better to take a softer approach and be more welcoming, and to some degree, he sort-of learns from his mistakes even if it takes him a while… Another moment that stood out was the support from back home for Youta. Little to no surprise, Youta’s friends all call him for updates on the matter reminding him not to give up, but hopefully, it’s not the last we see of them.

Overall an interesting episode that was heavily laced with emotions both positive and negative ones that were blended with Youta’s well-intentioned desire to reconnect with Hina, and the desires of their friends to help them. With Jun Maeda currently at the helm of this show, I don’t even know what direction this is heading, but the final episode next week should be a compelling watch…
