English Dub Review: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? “(Argonaut) Return of the Hero”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Hermes demands that a few of the Xenos sacrifice themselves for Bell’s reputation. The gargoyle, Gros agrees to it in exchange for the real way to Knossos for the other Xenos. A few of them go to the surface and scare the crowd which attracts Bell and the other families. Bell immediately protects Eina against Gros. However, Asterius crashed Hermes’s plan and Gros and the others hide with the Hestia familia.

Asterius asks for a battle from Bell after telling him  They fight as the Freya familia interferes with the Hermes familia and Loki familia. However, the fight ends with Bell’s loss as Asterius considers them even. The Knossos get back into the dungeon as Bell’s reputation among the public is good again. Bell goes over to the training place where he trained with Ais and when he sees her asks her to train him again which she agrees to.

Our Take:

This final episode ended Hermes’s plan and the mission to get the Xenos to safety in Knossos. The episode was successful in ending the conflicts, and even leaves a bit of hope with the ending.

Let’s start with Hermes’s plan on making Bell a hero by using the Xenos. Hermes’s plan quickly goes off the rails with Bell’s choice not to kill Gros and Asterius’s unexpected appearance. It’s important to note Bell’s grandpa’s words on being in control of one’s own fate rather than letting the gods decide on one’s path. It works well to emphasize Bell’s decision not to kill Gros. Hermes considers Bell a complete fool with that. Thousands of years of hatred against monsters can’t just disappear overnight, and he does make a fair point in that. However, before the people can question Bell’s actions Asterius appears itching for a fight.

The animation when Asterius pummeled into Bell was great and their fight was epic enough that it served its purpose in getting the public to root for Bell against Asterius. There’s also the moment when dawn breaks and Bell uses his ability to land one last strike at Asterius. Even though their battle ended with Bell’s loss it sets up Bell’s determination to grow stronger and in turn, regain his reputation among the public.

Overall the episode was a decent conclusion to the third season. The Xenos back in the dungeon and Bell’s reputation with the public restored. There’s also his desire to grow stronger which ends the season on a hopeful note.
