English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “The Mystery of the Hero Academy”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
The students learn they’ll be doing inter-academy classes with the human Hero Academy, which makes Anos curious if he’ll see his human friend, the hero Kanon, also reincarnated like he was. Upon arriving, they do meet a few upstarts who claim to be reincarnations of Kanon’s several hearts, as he had several sources of magic, but they act nothing like Kanon. He also asks a nicer student, Eleanor Bianca, what may have happened to Kanon after Anos was “killed” by him, to which she tells him that Kanon was killed not long after, but by a human.
OUR TAKE
So begins the last arc of this season and possibly the series, diving more into the cultures outside of the demons who we’ve gotten to know so far, as well as a bit more light shed on the world Anos left behind after his decision to die temporarily. Worth noting is the flashback at the beginning of the episode, which shows a uniquely human magic that combines comrade’s magic to defeat a single opponent, as well as how the humans among Kanon’s faction seemed to have different takes on the war than Kanon did, specifically Jerga who was hellbent on destroying Anos. Flashbacks to Anos’ old life have been a consistent pattern with the beginning of these arcs, likely laying the groundwork for things to be revealed over time but also slightly peeling apart the mystery of Avos Delhevia, who still has three of the Demon Emperors under his control it seems. I didn’t really mention them this time because they’re only kinda brought up and they won’t really be contributing much in the arc anyway. But still, I guess part of me is glad the eventually checked off the rest of that box?
It’s also nice to get some further worldbuilding and seeing how other cultures view the Demon King compared to the demon culture, which obviously sees him as a sacred hero of sorts. Naturally Kanon, being the hero of the humans, is going to take that equivalent spot in a human based society with Anos being the villain in their eyes, which also leads to us seeing alleged reincarnations of Kanon sprouting out of the ground here (one of them being voiced by J. Michael Tatum! And naturally it’s the one with the glasses and Ida-like demeanor). And having seen the rest of this arc, they do go into quite a bit of depth with how this culture has handled things differently for better or worse. We’ve only got a handful of episodes left and so it’s at least relieving we’ll be doing something here beyond fellating Anos with the writing for the rest of the series. Oh yeah, and Misha and Sasha were also around I guess. Frankly they’ve kinda fallen into the background since the initial arc so even seens where Anos is flirting with Sasha about her eyes don’t really feel worth mentioning, other than reminding me of Itachi and all his eyes talk. Four left to go!
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
