English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “Inter-Academy Exams”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The rest of Demon Academy’s students arrive at the Hero Academy, including a third year named Revest Aynie, who is the top of his class but doesn’t acknowledge Anos as the reincarnation of the Demon King. The two schools intermingle for a bit, with Anos’ group attending a festival and Lay and Misa going on a date, Anos noticing that Lay gives Misa a shell necklace from a stand. The next day, Revest’s team faces off against some of the Kanon reincarnations, but then are attacked with Holy Weapons, which leave them unable to heal. Anos plans to face them with his team next, though not before draining the lake of Holy Water so it can’t be used against them.

OUR TAKE

Being that this show is all about proving Anos right one hundred percent of the time, it’s probably expected by now that Revest is here to prove that someone who doesn’t acknowledge Anos has no chance of winning. That’s probably not what they intended him to represent, but it does fit in with that theme a bit too well to not mention. He’s also not been brought up before, nor will be meaningfully mentioned again for the rest of the season or series, so it seems he really was just a sacrificial lamb to show that only Anos can truly defeat these supposed reincarnations of Kanon. But I don’t know, it just seems really cheap if you have to make whole new characters JUST to Worf them and make your main character look better by comparison. And I’m not saying Revest has to win to prove Anos wrong, but I just wish it weren’t so obvious that he’s losing just for that purpose. At a certain point, it’s just really shameless, but then again, we’ve seen this show get a lot more shameless than this.

Though with all of that in mind, I certainly did not expect Lay and Misa to start being a thing. It’s coming a bit out of nowhere this late into the season, but with how things were structured for this series so far, I just kind of assumed that all the women were eventually going to crush on Anos for some reason or another because Anos is too awesome to NOT have all the women in the story. But no, we surprisingly do have a B Couple here, even if the only thing they seem to really have between them is that Misa tried to help his mom that one time. Speaking of which, what happened with Lay’s mom? Is she still a sword? It’s hard to keep track of all of these things sometimes. Still, I’m sure their budding romance will in no way be immediately threatened by the upcoming battle, nor any further interference by Avos Delhevia. Yep, it is very likely that the rest of this season will only be focused on fighting these snarky fake reincarnations of Kanon the Hero as we close in on the season finale. I would bet my very soul on that being a true statement so don’t try and look into that as setting anything up.
