Review: Our Cartoon President “Wartime President”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Trump’s popularity continues to dip even after his “recovery” from COVID, leading him to believe he needs to become a “Wartime President” against the virus in order to win back the trust of the people. Things seem to improve on this front, but he then realizes he doesn’t really care about people and just wants be his selfish self. Also Jake Tapper teaches Chris Cuomo how to be a serious news guy.
OUR TAKE
Well, here’s an odd pattern I’ve seen emerge from this show that I didn’t expect: Awkward Male Friendships. We’ve had Biden and Obama (and Bernie Sanders), Don Jr and Hunter Biden, and now Chris Cuomo and Jake Tapper, all of which have had plots focused on them which are almost sort of weird rom com plots that end up with the two of them having a fight and then becoming even closer by the end (even though said friendship probably won’t be followed up on because the gag is over by that point). I guess this is something that has been happening at last throughout this season but it’s certainly something about THIS show that seems to be one of its trademark jokes. Though with only two episodes left before Election Day, it also seems a bit odd to focus on these two newscasters, though maybe they just ran dry with politician jokes for the week and wanted to shift the focus and make news people jokes. Either way, I care even less about these two than their portrayals of the president and company, so you can see how that’ll reflect my views on the episode itself. Meaning I didn’t especially care about it.
I mean hey, great that they got to work in Trump having COVID into their broad plot, as well as finally taking a breather from Biden’s schtick, which was starting to really grate on me there and probably will for the rest of the season. Maybe it’s just that the nature of this show being based on people who I am both fearful and increasingly angry at that really impacts how I can view them humorously at this point, or that this loose and improvisational form of writing episode plots based on how the news goes makes it difficult to really critique the plots or characters who could change on a dime at any moment, or perhaps even that the joke of making a cartoon about Trump has just gone on too long, but we have three episodes left in the season and once again I feel nothing but apathy. Maybe once I am able to look back on this season, or even this series, as one solid piece, removed from history for a bit, and look at it for what it was, but we might just be too deep in this for that objective analysis to happen, at least right now. I guess we’ll see in a few weeks where that lands.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
