English Dub Review: Monster Girl Doctor “Attack on Gigas”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Just as Doctor Glenn and Sapphee are about to head home, they receive word that a giant goddess is coming to invade the village. Lady Tisalia gets everyone evacuated, and then goes to fight the monster herself. Glenn and Sapphee catch up just in time, and together the three of them confront her.

It turns out to be merely a Gigas living in the Vivre Mountains who got a cold. She’s coming down because she heard about Doctor Glenn, and wants a check up. He gives his biggest physical yet, and decides all she needs is some warmer clothing. Luckily, the creepy spider lady is still around to make some warm outerwear for her.

Our Take:

Monster Girl Doctor’s eighth episode is a textbook example of the show doing exactly what it’s good at doing. Doctor Glenn and Nurse Sapphee encounter a dastardly problem, fix it with a little medical miracle work and some help from their past patients/friends/love interests.

The overall setup of the episode isn’t a bad one. In fact, it’s definitely one of the most interesting storylines since the show escaped from Lindworm into the harpy village. A giant goddess coming to wreak havoc is no laughing matter! Unfortunately, or fortunately if that’s what you’re into, the giant turns out to be a far cry from the Attack on Titan variety. Instead, all she needs is some cold medicine. Doctor Glenn’s examination of her is all kinds of awkward as he slips and slides down her shirt, and this was definitely the dumbest part of an otherwise standard episode.

Lady Tisalia takes a big step forward in this week’s plot thanks to her bravery when it comes to putting her life on the line for her friends. She’s all ready to face the giantess by herself if that’s what it takes to by the village more time to escape. When Glenn and Sapphee eventually find her, it makes for one of the funniest scenes of the show when Glenn tells her that, as her doctor, he can’t just let her go to a sure death battle alone.

In fact, Tisalia and Doctor Glenn go on a date at the end of the episode. It’s a big moment for them, and Sapphee, who hangs around to make sure the chivalrous centaur doesn’t steal the good doctor’s affection away from her. Things get a little silly with all the ‘look how well these two are getting along now’ type thing, but it’s cool to see some forward progress on the Glenn/Tisalia romance angle instead of just a bunch of teasing.

The episode concludes with Lady Draconness passing out while giving a speech about the city. It’s a major cliffhanger, and I’m sure she’s going to need a good doctor to get out of this mess alive.
