English Dub Review: Hatena Illusion Episode 10

Overview:

The family goes down to Australia after being delivered an ultimatum.

Our Take:

As it turns out, Kana can get her mother back if she manages to steal three extremely rare artifacts. One is in Australia, one is under the safekeeping of an enemy organization, and the other seems to be unknown. They all head down to Australia undercover with this goal in mind, and we will have to see what they end up planning.

Kana’s moment on the beach with Shiranui was a small moment, but very cute. He decided to follow her to Australia not because it had any particular direct benefit to him, but because he’s come to realize that he is Hatena’s partner. If she is determined, then so is she. Him finding her early in the morning on the beach and them sharing some time together was genuinely adorable. I like how they’ve bonded over time, and Shiranui’s come a long way. Kana has also really grown into Hatena’s role, and seeing as what’s upcoming is likely the final heist, I want to see just how much she can do. Also, what will her finishing move be like?

This round didn’t actually have much to do with the kids themselves, but honestly, I’m okay with that. Also Jeeves hulking out and taking out a giant golem with his bare hands was great. Sometimes it’s fine to see the adults wailing on hordes of enemies and showing how they are worthy of the title of adversaries and mentors.

I think it’s a little strange more not the focus of the episode, but how rushed things seemed to be. While this is trying to be the espionage episode, where the capable people take care of things behind the scenes for the heroes to move forward, it felt like a lot of ideas came out of nowhere. Replica artifacts? That sounds important- but the entire research facility was discovered and blown up in a single episode. An evil organization that is funding and hoarding powerful artifacts with an army of manpower behind them? Dealt with swiftly and quietly. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the ideas presented, but it felt like they needed a little more time to be fleshed out. Then again, this is the final arc, and it’s clear that the next two episodes are focusing on the kids. It’s unfortunate, but compression is necessary, even if it makes for a much more rushed story.
