WarnerMedia News: HBO MAX Orders Pilot For “Chinos” ; Details For Comic-Con @ Home

With a competing online convention happening the same week, it’s not a big surprise that Adult Swim programming is rather light for Comic-Con @ Home. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a couple of interesting panels lined up. With the previously announced American Dad representing TBS & 20th Century FOX, we just got details about a new Close Enough panel as well as a killer all-star panel featuring producers from a number of Adult Swim series that you can learn more about below.

CLOSE ENOUGH

Thursday, July 23 at 5 p.m. PT

Join JG Quintel, creator of the Emmy Award-winning Regular Show for a panel and table read for his new HBO Max series CLOSE ENOUGH, a surreal animated comedy about a married couple, their five-year-old daughter, and their two divorced best friends/roommates all living together on the east-side of Los Angeles. Jason Mantzoukas (Alex), Gabrielle Walsh (Emily), Kimiko Glenn (Bridgette) and Jessica DiCicco (Candice) will join Quintel (Josh) and Calvin Wong (supervising producer) and moderator William Salyers (Regular Show) to discuss the show’s themes of navigating the transitional 30’s, juggling work and kids, and pursuing your dreams, while avoiding time-traveling snails, stripper clowns, and murderous mannequins. Cartoon Network Studios’ CLOSE ENOUGH is now streaming on HBO Max.

HBO Max Adult Animation Featuring ROBOT CHICKEN, FINAL SPACE and PRIMAL/SAMURAI JACK

Friday, July 24 at 3 p.m. PT

Join show creators of ROBOT CHICKENSAMURAI JACK, Genndy Tartakovsky’s PRIMALBLACK DYNAMITELAZOR WULF and FINAL SPACE as they share their favorite San Diego Comic-Con memories. Panelists include Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, Genndy Tartakovsky, Carl Jones, Henry Bonsu and Olan Rogers.

Ever wanted to learn how to draw one of your favorite AMERICAN DAD characters? Now is your chance, join show Supervising Director, Brent Woods, as he teaches the cast and executive producers how to draw Roger! Grab a sketchbook & pens and learn to draw everyone’s favorite alien alongside Rachael MacFarlane (“Hayley”), Wendy Schaal (“Francine”), Scott Grimes (“Steve”), Dee Bradley Baker (“Klaus”) and EPs Nic Wegener and Joe Chandler as they chat about the current season and look toward the series’ 300th episode airing on TBS this fall.

In related news, Deadline is reporting that HBO MAX has won a bid to order a pilot for adult animated series Chinos. The series comes from Fresh Off the Boat creator Eddie Huang in a collaboration with Raf Martinez, tattoo artist Dr. Woo, and artist/animator Bernard Chang leading the art direction of the show.

The concept is an exploration of the subcultures in Los Angeles through the Asian American experience while flipping the “model minority” notion on its head.

Our Take

It’s early, but this is one of my most eagerly-awaited series pitches I’ve seen in a while. Already the show looks like an Asian take on The Boondocks and it could be the slickest looking series on the streaming service by the time it posts.
