Comic-Con 2020 Recap: “Hoops”

As promotional material for the upcoming “Hoops”, a video panel was made at Comic-Con consisting of the voice cast and crew involved such as Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, Ron Funches, Natasha Leggero, Cleo King, A.D. Miles, executive producer Ben Hoffman along with moderator/ guest voice star Max Greenfield.

The show’s basic premise is about a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who is confident he’ll hit the big leagues if he can only turn his terrible team around. We also get a panel opening with a clip from the premiere episode of the upcoming show which sets the tone on what to forward to, including the show’s theme song and opening sequence which is actually sung by Hoffman himself.

Hoffman is also no stranger to comedy as he has a decent track record being involved with other works such as The Late Late Show with James Corden, Archer, and has collaborated in the past with the directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller who famously did “The Lego Movie”. The animation is also being produced by Bento Box Entertainment (Bob’s Burgers, Paradise PD, and Brickleberry).

The conversations between the panelists immediately showcased the fun camaraderie & chemistry between the cast, especially since Johnson and Greenfield have a history together being part of Fox sitcom “New Girl” and everyone clearly embraces the unfiltered & unrestrained nature Netflix is often known for. The group audaciously describes Hoops as the “filthiest” series they’ve ever done or even seen, with Hoffman comparing it to an “X-rated Simpsons”.

And finally, season 1 will be available on August 21st later this year.

Our Take

With how BoJack Horseman having recently ended it’s run, It makes sense that Netflix would want more adult animated shows as they’re fully aware that shows like “F is for Family” and “Big Mouth” aren’t enough to fill that void for their particular audience. For this reason, I see the full potential of this show to be another hit in Netflix’s catalog and I can’t wait to see & hear the uncensored product when it’s released.
