Review: The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorites Special

Hosted by David Dorbik, The SpongeBob SquarePants cast reunites to perform the iconic theme song along with reenacting Fan Favorite Scenes for a virtual table read. Featuring “Tom Kenny (Spongebob), Bill Fagerbakke, Patrick) Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabb), Rodger Bumpass(Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), And finally Mr. Lawrence, (Plankton).


Our Take

Ever since the advent of social distancing and COVID-19 there’s been a substantial boom with virtual video group chats on TV of various things. From celebrity interviews to even Trevor Noah doing The Daily Show in the comfort of his home. And with host David Dorbick along with the main voice-cast of Spongebob Squarepants, this is no exception.

At most, the table read is a glorified clip show that primarily consists of iconic scenes voted by fans with many comedic moments throughout the course of the show that are carefully reenacted, along with random tidbits of info that are shared during interviews to keep things fun. Sometimes revealing weird facts about themselves such as Carolyn saying that she grew up in Ohio and how much of her performance as Sandy was inspired by Holly Hunter.

For a long-running animated series that has 12+ seasons under its belt and a lasting legacy with Nickelodeon, you’d think the special itself would’ve been at least an hour longer. And while it catered to longtime fans to some capacity, everything was edited down at a brisk pace to fit the 30 min running time.

It’s not a bad special, but to longtime fans of the show, you might be left wanting more, unless they make another one of these in the future.
