English Dub Review: Sorcerous Stabber Orphen “Make My Past Disappear, Assassin”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
After Claiomh is kidnapped by the assassin, Orphen journeys to find her and face off with the assassin that calls himself Krylancelo once and for all in order to save her. Meanwhile, Majic learns the true story of his master’s exile and he and Leticia follow Orphen to the confrontation.
Once Orphen reaches the place where Krylancelo the assassin is keeping Claiomh, he readies himself to face his opponent. Krylancelo is powerful, so Orphen resorts to playing three dirty tricks on him in order to get the upper hand. In the end, he discovers that his adversary is nothing but a killing doll who is acting on orders from Azalie the Chaos Witch. Azalie confronts him, and gives him an offer before disappearing.
Our Take:
In Make My Past Disappear, Assassin, the tenth episode of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, our hero is pitted against what he considers to be the ultimate foe: a better, stronger version of himself. The battle between them is a struggle of strategy and force, and the resulting outcome sheds new light on Orphen’s past and his relationship with both Childman and Azalie.
Before the main battle kicks in, the episode opens up with a little history lesson given to Majic, Orphen’s underling. He’s informed of the decision that caused his master to become an exile, and even though he doesn’t think it could be true, he eventually seems to accept it. After that’s out of the way, the main plot kicks into gear and Orphen makes it to the battle between himself and Krylancelo. Childman taught him as a child to exploit the weaknesses of stronger opponents in order to best them, but how can he do that when the assassin is a perfect version of himself?
It’s a challenging problem at first, and he cannot overcome him based on physical strength alone. He tries three different “dirty tricks”, which basically amount to him using actual brute force instead of spells. It’s honestly pretty hilarious to see how surprised Krylancelo is when Orphen just walks over and punches him in the face. The spells themselves are also pretty silly, with names like “Sword of Light” and “Dancing Bronco”. But the actual end of the conflict happens when Orphen exploits the one weakness he knows Krylancelo to have – a weakness in his own mind that hasn’t been patched. He uses the guilt that he knows the assassin feels in order to get him to drop his guard.
The tenth episode of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen is both an exciting physical battle and a surprisingly nuanced emotional one. Orphen’s inner conflict is manifested in part by this struggle in the real world, and the new knowledge he gains of Childman and his motivations for training him in mental control in order to neutralize white sorcerers adds a new level of complexity to an already overstuffed show. I’m not totally sure about how everything that was revealed will play out, or if it will even matter in the end, but the fight was pretty fun either way.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
