English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind: “Spicy Lady”

Overview(Spoilers Below)

In an effort to save Giorno and by-extension everyone else’s ass within Bruno’s circle while traveling on a moving plane in the sky. Trish is trapped with the relentless and horrifying Notorious Chase Stand but must find a solution to both protect and acquire Giorno’s slowly reforming hand without attracting Chase in the process. But wouldn’t you know it? Chase attacks her, but it’s here when the plot reaches a major turning point. Something that’s been building up since the first 20+ episodes of this series, Trish’s Stand Powers finally awaken! As the episode’s title implies, her Stand calls itself “Spicy Lady” (“Spice Girl” in Japan).

Much like Koichi’s Reverb Stand from Diamond is Unbreakable it’s not only sentient but very vocal to Trish often encouraging her to make smart decisions and take a more proactive role in the face of danger. Spicy explains to Trish that it has the ability to make any hard object or surface “malleable” and rubber-like thereby countering Chase’s absorption and penetration abilities, and Spicy even goes as far as to distract Chase long enough to make quick work of it by Impaling this blob-like Stand monstrosity with a pipe.

At first, you’d think this would instantly be over with Trish returning to the cockpit to help the others, But Chase proves to be more resilient as this putrid Stand creature manages to travel through the planes crevices and attack the engine, which only further exacerbates their current situation. Trish then uses her newfound Stand powers to turn the cockpit into a makeshift parachute while Chase and the rest of the airplane crash into the Tyrrhenian Sea. And despite this, Chase is not dead but its sort-of defeated as it remains trapped in the ocean due to the constantly moving waves. Later in a narration, we’re left to assume that Giorno was able to heal himself and the others, and have now arrived on Sardegna undetected. However, the episode ends when their elusive ex-boss and Trish’s father senses that they survived and that Trish has awakened her Stand. Fearing that they’ll find actual clues about his past, he decides to travel to his native island of Sardegna alone and take ruthless measures to preserve his anonymity.

Our Take

That was impressive of Trish on her first fight, considering it was the first time she used her stand. I’m starting to like her because she has evolved from the stuck-up useless “Diva” attitude she previously had, which is a contrast to most of the male characters up to this point. This was Trish’s first moment to shine. And in terms of acting ability, the animation in combination with an intensely emotive performance of Lizzie Freeman also voicing both Trish and her “Spicy” stand really sold it for me.

Subconsciously, the way Trish was developed in this episode implies that she always had a more daring and, well, “spicy” side to her but that never came to light because of her moments of hesitation while always putting up a tough front. But I guess all that could’ve changed after her near-death experience from her own father.

Overall, the tension, suspense, and moments of triumph for Trish as a character felt earned and delivered in spades. You can make the argument that this could’ve felt rushed to some people. But with how everything was carefully foreshadowed in past episodes, (not to mention also foreshadowed in the new Intro) I don’t think there was anything wrong with her development and I’d like to see more of her “Spicy Lady” stand in the future. Now that Trish and Bruno’s crew have reached their potential destination without anyone else knowing about it,(with the exception of their ex-boss) the quest to find out the Passione boss’s true Identity begins!
