English Dub Review: Fruits Basket “Shall We Go and Get You Changed?”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The episode begins with the begrudging relationship of Yuki and his overbearingly flamboyantly over the top brother “Ayame” (Voiced by Chris Sabat) and much to the irritation of Yuki’s attitude towards his brother (which almost mirror’s the way Yuki arrogantly belittles Kyo) on a regular basis, Tohru recognizes that Yuki wants to fix his relationship with him in some way. Upon getting Ayame’s Arts & Crafts store that makes custom dresses and outfits, we get to the heart of this episode by learning a bit about Ayame’s past and part of why his relationship with Yuki is so strained…

Our Take

Compared to the loud and cringe-worthy display of humor from Ayame, I think the show excels the most when the jokes aren’t trying too hard to be funny. And while Ayame’s flamboyant attitude at times can come across as irritating with his flair for the dramatic. We do at least get some semblance of seriousness in the proceedings such as a heart-to-heart between the two, with Yuki proclaiming that he isn’t running away anymore, and wants to face whatever problems that come his way, even his own brother.

Overall, the dynamic between the brothers, who are so close by blood but so far in personality, is a very relatable scenario within families, and the episode just goes to show how Yuki and Ayame are opening up their worlds with considerable help by the women at their sides. We do see a flashback where much of their strained relationship stems from, but while the Indifference of it’s aftermath does hurt, it isn’t too late for them. I mean, the damage is done, but there’s still a future. Let’s hope Yuki will find out what he wants to do after high school and muster the strength he needs to deal with his despicable “parents”.
