English Dub Review: If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die “You Were My Everything”
(Possible Spoilers Below)
Told from the perspective of the Chamjam Idol named “Sorane”, we get an obligatory flashback episode of sorts, we see the origins of how each Idol member joined ChamJam through the charms and friendly nature of Reo. During their early years as they were a struggling Idol group, they all made a promise to work hard enough and make it to the titular “Budokan” which is basically Japan’s equivalent to the “Apollo Theater” because to them, that’s when they know that they’ve achieved true celebrity status.
In a separate subplot, Eripiyo is faced with multiple misunderstandings due to a ridiculous color-system that instantly accuses her of switching to a different Idol as her favorite if she carries something around that isn’t Maina’s color, not to mention Sorane is now being accused of breaking an “unspoken rule” that the Idol Scene often looks down upon…
Our Take
If there’s one thing I give this show the most praise for, it’s either the fluid animation in the dance scenes, or beautiful background art that deserves to be in a much better anime, especially considering that the show doesn’t really need to go the extra mile (They aren’t exploring a new world, nor do the locations themselves play much of a part in the plot).
In terms of story structure, the writing is hit and miss but this was slightly more refreshing as it doesn’t completely put the focus on the rabid fan obsessed drivel of Eripiyo this time. I’m also glad that Eripiyo got all her feelings out in 5 seconds in person, as opposed to relying on Cham Jam’s awful staff to deliver her poems and gifts. (I’m still salty that Maina still thinks Eripyo has never written her a letter.) Maybe by the end of the season, Maina will stop getting in her own way in terms of returning Eripyo’s feelings.
Compared to the previously exceedingly cringe episodes that were trying to sneer at idol fans and millennials while getting them to hand over their money, This was at least somewhat passable but I’m still clearly not the audience for this…
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
