Comic Review: RWBY #13 Weiss: Part Three “The Cage”

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

During the events of Vol.4, as Weiss tries to escape from Schnee Manor, it’s not without problems aside from her rich unrepentant asshole father Jacques, her mother Willow Schnee isn’t willing to just let her daughter run off again…

Our Take

Within this retconned story, we learn about certain events that lead up to Weiss’s escape from the Schnee manor that fills in gaps of info that were left unanswered from the show, but with the last time Weiss speaks to willow, things aren’t what they seem because, despite Willow’s attitude, there’s a blatant hint of unwillingness to her actions during her heated argument with Weiss. From Willow’s perspective, she’s bitter and sad that her own kids would want nothing to do with her and her screwed up dysfunctional lifestyle, but what Weiss does in retaliation while giving a warranted speech about her behavior which may serve as a wake-up call of sorts.

Once again we’re in the good graces of writer Marguerite Bennette, artist Mirka Andolfo and colorist Arif Prianto, as this issue serves as a continuation to Weiss’s part two story involving her mother Willow. What we further learn about Willow here is a stark contrast to the person she is now in Vol.7 Since Willow long after those events is now a more passive docile alcoholic compared to the active lifestyle we see in the comics retconned storylines of her collecting Animals and Faunus slave labor for sport.

Overall, this was a well-written chapter that continues to make me root for Weiss even more as a character. She’s come a long way and ever since the “Tipping Point” episode and has arguably had more character development in Volume 7. And I really hope to see what’s become of the Schnee Family in later chapters of this comic, Volume 8 and beyond.
