English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Overhaul”

Overview:

Someone new contacts the League of Villains.

Our Take:

Primarily, Midoriya wonders about his future. Given the events of last season, he is in a relatively uncertain place. The rest of the world is uncertain along with him, but Midoriya has a lot to think about. All Might gives him some advice, and all of it is true. Midoriya is in a precarious situation, and while he’s gotten much better at managing his quirk, it’s still not something he can use casually. He has a long way to go, and he needs some help and guidance in order to shape it. Luckily, this is a desire that also comes from within, as Midoriya is constantly seeking to improve himself. Unfortunately, it’s equally as hard to find a person willing to take him on, even with his potential.

His friendship and admiration of Mirio from last season come into play, as they both decide to help each other out. Mirio ends up helping Midoriya get an internship, especially because Gran Torino is busy with investigations, and we meet All Might’s former sidekick, Sir Nighteye. Nighteye didn’t get a very expansive introduction this time around, but it’s clear that even though he appreciates humor, he’s a very strict person. Mirio is fairly laid-back and genuine, but Nighteye seems far more stern, and Midoriya seems to have made an absolutely poor impression. Things aren’t looking good so far.

Here we meet the big bad of the season, who quickly overshadows the long-running villain group, the League of Villains. Chisaki is the leader of the Yakuza, so this is a different viewpoint of the underground from what we’ve been shown so far. It’s clear that he isn’t interested in partnering with the villains as much as he is using them for his own needs and forcing them into a position where they have to listen to him. He is clearly powerful and well prepared, able to kill off Magne with ease and take on Mr. Compress and Shigaraki without sustaining harm. Most of the villains we have seen so far are either from the League or connected to the League (in the case of All for One, heading it), but this is a completely new party. I’m excited to see what perspective this can bring because the League and what they represent is just a small subset of the villain underground. There’s a lot of potentials that can be explored.
