Comic Review: RWBY #5 Weiss: Part One Look At Me

Schnee Manor the home of the rich & powerful Schnee family, is more like a prison than a home to Weiss at this point. Trapped in a place she wants nothing to do with, Weiss reflects on her time at Beacon Academy which gives her some proper introspection.

Our Take

Much like the previous chapters of this comic run, this is a series of ret-conned storylines within RWBY. And In this case, the focus is towards the family heir Weiss Schnee and the aftermath of being forcibly dragged by her father back to her upper-class kingdom of Atlas which takes place between the events of Vol.3 and 4. But in Weiss’s case, she begins to reflect on her time in Beacon while stuck in the Schnee Mansion against her will despite her older sister Winter who broke away from the family’s brutal grip and now works for the Atlas military.

During her time supposedly imprisoned within her home, Rwby fans are left to assume this could’ve taken place either before or after the popular episode “Tipping Point” where Weiss verbally called out the hypocritical & condescending rich assholes of a charity party that was meant to help the “Fall of Beacon” victims but ironically were less than kind regarding the aftermath of that gruesome & tragic event, and even laughed at how disadvantaged they were. The rest of the flashback is some words of wisdom she took to heart from Blake in response to a training session where she humiliated an otherwise contemptuous character by the name of “Cardin Winchester” whom we haven’t seen since Vol.3 and was mostly the antagonist for Jaune in Vol.1, but I’m not really shocked that anyone is fair game to him at this point when it comes to his bullying antics.

As usual, The comic team involved with this ongoing series Writer Marguerite Bennette, Artist Mirka Andolfo and Colorist Arif Prianto continue the consistency of filling in gaps of information left unanswered of characters between specific events as we see personal character growth, However if I had any major complaints with this issue, It’s that we don’t know who Weiss was talking to while she contemplates her time at Beacon or with Team RWBY other than the person talking to her had speech bubbles that were written in a light-blue text for some reason.

My guess is it’s either her asshole father Jacques or her equally douchey brother Whitley? But I have strong doubts that it’s her mother since 1). We’ve yet to see her introduced in the show so far, and 2). According to Weiss in various conversations about her mother, She’s a bitter alcoholic who barely interacts with anyone. Of course, that is subject to change possibly within later seasons of the show as she doesn’t even have a voice actress yet at the time of this review.

Now that all 4 characters have gotten their own introductory chapters, What will the next chapter delve into next? I guess we’ll find out soon from this current run by DC comics.
