Review: Bob’s Burgers “Just One of the Boyz 4 Now for Now”

Do it for us, now.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Boyz 4 Now is auditioning for a fourth member and Tina runs into one of the hopefuls and instantly falls in love. As a result, she dons a disguise to infiltrate the “No Girls Allowed” tryout to find this “Damon” character and profess her love. On the way, Tina runs into a bunch of boys that she instantly falls in love with and we get songs with every single one of them. Eventually, security nabs Tina for breaking into the all-boys audition.

Meanwhile, Bob helps Teddy by taking care of a baby rat at the restaurant with the rest of the family. Of course, it doesn’t take long for Hugo to show up and now get suspicious of the fact that a restaurant that serves food to customers may have a rodent problem. After a close call, Bob and the clan head to Tina’s audition to pick her up in time to learn that Boyz 4 Now has reunited with its original lineup.

Our Take

Lizzie Molyneux & Wendy Molyneux are so good at writing episodes that it makes perfect sense that they’d create another show all for them hopefully coming soon. The ninth season premiere buoys the fact that the two writers were very much responsible (along with Dan Mintz’s perfect delivery) of making Tina Belcher into a star and a bankable character in which to write entire episodes about. This episode perfectly encapsulates that and serves as a great way to kick off that very well may get the Emmy-nom by the time it’s all said and done. Broadway stars Josh Gad (who will star in Loren Bouchard’s other series for Apple), Daveed Diggs, Andrew Rannells, and Rory O’Malley make for excellent contributions and serve hilariously opposite Tina when we get into the different musical numbers accompanied by dream sequences.

Unfortunately, the rest of the family got suckered into a rather standard “B” plot that probably could’ve been written out entirely in favor of more song numbers and maybe even showcase some of the tryouts for the open “Boyz 4 Now” slot (PS, anyone see the American Dad! reference?). In any event, episode 151 serves as a great launching pad in what appears to be an already strong season for Bob’s Burgers.
