English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super “Field the All-7th-Universe Team! Who are the Mighty Ten!?”
Who could they possibly be!?
Overview (Spoilers Below)
With only thirty some odd hours until the start of the Tournament of Power, Goku, and the others have to figure a team of ten fighters from Universe 7 to compete. Once they arrive back on Earth, everyone discusses who they should pick. At first, they consider Krillin, but Gohan is a bit worried about his power level. Goku tells him it should be fine though because apparently Krillin has been training quite a bit and has some new techniques no one knows about yet.
Goku and Gohan also decide on a few others, namely Master Roshi, Androids 17 and 18, as well as Vegeta, but there’s a problem with recruiting the saiyan prince. Bulma is pregnant, and Vegeta is steadfast in wanting to be a good husband and father, so he’s not going anywhere until Bulma is safe and sound with their new child. Whis has a solution, though, and uses his magic to deliver Bulma’s child fully formed with no muss and no fuss.
After Bulma’s immaculate conception, everyone swoons over the new child, who gets the name “Bulla.” Vegeta stands guard over his child, glaring down anyone who makes his sweet little baby cry, and is eventually okay with her name, even though he would have preferred a proud saiyan name for his new spawn. With Vegeta presumably on lock to be a fighter in the Tournament of Power, Goku flies off around the world to go find the other potential candidates.
Our Take:
Well, this is a cute little episode. Not a terribly interesting or exciting one, but a nice little interim before we get to some of the more juicy parts awaiting us in the upcoming tournament. There’s a lot of fun character moments here, but the episode drags a bit towards the end when it becomes clear that there isn’t going to be a whole lot that gets accomplished here.
The first half of the episode starts pretty strong, as we learn more about what needs to be done for the tournament. The show sets up the next few episodes, hinting at the future recruitment of Krillin and a handful of others while making it clear that things are going to be a little bit different this time around. Whis informs them that senzu beans will not be allowed, which is a nice way to raise some of the tension the impending battles are going to have.
The episode starts to really fall off when we get to the “Bulma’s pregnancy” part of the episode. While it’s important for the show to reiterate the stakes and find a way to bring Vegeta into the fray, far too much time is spent on people gushing over Bulla. The show repeats the same scene basically three times, with everyone making silly faces over Bulla and laughing about how cute babies are while Vegeta gets overprotective. Yeah, it’s a little cute, but it doesn’t make for great viewing. That whole sequence probably could have been done in about two minutes. I’ll make a special note though that seeing Whis “deliver” Bulma’s baby was just…kinda weird and wild. I mean, I know its a fantasy anime and magic is a thing, but there’s just something strange about an alien spirit “De-pregnating” someone. It just ain’t right, I tell you what.
The humor is what really carries the episode here, and that can be a bit hit or miss. I found Yamcha’s vanity and desire to be “One of the guys” again to be pretty amusing in a meta sort of way. Poor Yamcha has been the second fiddle to the second fiddles for quite some time now, and it would be nice to see him come back with some good moments, even as a comic relief character. If the jokes work for you, and the cute works for you, you’ll probably find this episode to be a good time. But even if that falls a bit flat, this episode does do a solid job of building up hype for what’s to come.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
