Review: We Bare Bears “Crowbar Jones: Origins“

Is this episode worth staying for a pitch?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

Grizz pitches a prequel idea to his Crowbar Jones Indie film franchise to the famous yet contemptuous Koala celebrity, “Nom Nom” (Voiced by Patton Oswalt) in hopes that Nom Nom will say yes to being in the movie despite how amateurish & low budget Grizz’s film comes across.

Our Take

While we haven’t seen Nom Nom interact with Grizz for a while since Vacation, the episode itself in a number of ways, feels like a call-back to other past episodes that often involve Nom Nom’s uneasy relationship with Grizz as he rarely shows a softer side to anyone other than his bodyguard/assistant named “Farmer”. But the heart of the episode was Grizz just wanting Nom Nom to be part of a prequel within his indie-film series.

The prequel indie-film itself while funny in places thankfully doesn’t feel like a complete ego massage on Grizz’s end as he attempts an actual coherent plot within his story regardless of how low-budget & silly all of it looks. And you could tell proverbial blood, sweat and tears are being put into it, rather than making him 80% of the focus.

While the humor hits it marks when needed, it also felt like a subtle satirical jab at consumerism when the focus is shifted to Nom Nom’s plush toy factory in which it’s assembly line method of inserting a voice chip, feels backwards and hilariously counter-productive, but I think that was the point.

Overall, “Crowbar Jones: Origins“ was a fun watch with a small series of subplots that slowly tied themselves together in a way that somehow makes sense near the end. I think what stood out for me the most was the satire involving Nom Nom’s Plush toy factory, but all of it culminated in a funny ending that while-short & simple, delivered on the laughs.
