English Dub Review: Magical Girl Raising Project “Add More Friends!”

It is always from the quiet ones that you have to be wary about.

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS BELOW)

We start the episode seeing the world through the lens of Ruler, her past, and present, and why she is the stuck-up bully among our lovely cast of cosplayers on high. And her unexpected dismiss.

In a surprising turn of events, the Princess Diane wannabe suffered a coup d’état organized by no other than the overly quiet Swim-Swim, with the support of the Peachy Angels, and the dubious assistance from the Dog Furry. Snow White is a candy machine, La Pucelle really knows who to swing around his/her sword, take that as you want, Top Speed is definitively Best Girl and Calamity Mary is probably in bed a riot.

Oh, the new cosplayer entered the scene and she looks kind of unhinged goth-ish if you know what I mean.

OUR TAKE

The plot twist in this episode caught me out of the guard, if I am begin honest, I did not expect that the pinknette was capable of murder like that, especially given her real age. The victory dance from the angel brats was not surprising, cementing them as the scumbags they are, and Tama’s shocked reaction was, if lukewarm, really normal. It is Swim-Swim actions, reasoning and emotional output that is worrisome. Poor Nemurin, how she could know that her kind, encouraging words could be taken out of context and twisted in such a manner. Nice foreshadowing on that one by the way.

As a non-sequitur, I really expected more from Ruler. In the last episode, we saw that, while she is an unpleasant person to be around –bossy, demanding, condescending, etc- she really wanted that all her team pass the trials ahead and made some sort of effort in devising them plans so they could earn enough candies for their survival. I was expecting more character development from her, in which she either become worst -managing to push away all her companions- or become more of a Tsundere but a kinder person with her subordinates. But that ship was mercilessly sunk by one of her own that she did try to help as best as she could without breaking character. Hence, my surprise at her dismissal. Not exactly the classic way of doing things in this kind of shows.

For comparison’s sake, I saw this episode with subs, and I have to say I prefer the dub version. I feel that there is more characterization with each cast member than with the original voice actors. Shocking for me, I know, who is a sub purist, but it happens from time to time.

The only fault I found is that there wasn’t enough “Best Girl Top Speed” on this episode.
