English Dub Review: Overlord “The Final Battle of the Disturbance”

Momon vs. Jaldabaoth, who will win this fight of the century?

Overview (Spoilers Below)

By a strange turn of fate, or perhaps something more, Momon (Ainz in disguise) has arrived to face Jaldabaoth (Demiurge in a mask) in mortal combat. Demiurge seemingly has no idea as to the nature of Momon’s true identity, and the two soon clash while Evileye fangirls out over. It’s not every day she gets to see Momon in action.

Meanwhile, Brain and Climb have rescued Tsuare from her captivity in the Eight Fingers’ dungeon. Before they can make it out of the compound alive, however, the two warriors are ambushed by Zero, the final member of the Six Hands. In proper villainous fashion, he offers Brain the chance to swear loyalty to him, but when he refuses, its go time. Before their fight can begin, however, its revealed that Tsuare isn’t actually Tsuare at all, but Succulent in a maid disguise; a clever lure. With the aid of Lockmeier’s thief knowledge, Climb is able to take on Succulent with his own martial prowess, while Brain goes to work on Zero. Climb eventually downs Succulent with a well-placed knee to the scrotum, but things are far from over. Zero and Brain decide its time to take things seriously, and the two bring out their respective aces in the hole to bring each other to a swift end. But just as they’re about to rip each other apart, gentleman extraordinaire Sebas arrives to show them how things are done.

Zero is surprised to see the badass butler arrive, and even more surprised to see that he’s found the real Tsuare and kept her safe and sound. Zero quickly tries to bring the pain down on Sebas with a punch to the face, but after the dust of his attack settles, Sebas is left completely unscathed. He counters with a jackboot ax kick to the cranium, smashing Zero’s brain in one fell swoop.

We cut back to Momon and Jaldabaoth, who’s fight is already in progress. Momon’s incredible strength and resistance to Jaldabaoth’s demonic parasitic attacks has earned the demon’s respect. Evileye is head over heels for Momon, basking in the chivalrous sight of a knight protector. But before the fight can reach its head, Jaldabaoth announces his departure, with other parts of the night’s raid awaiting him. Momon and Evileye then look over the wounded Blue Roses and appraise each other of the situation. The tension runs high when Momon hears that Evil-eye almost killed one of his (Ainz’s) battle maids, but that soon gives way to more of Evileye’s awkward crushing.

Following the battle, Momon monologues to himself and speaks to Nabe about why he’s come out here and what his plans are. Turns out, he didn’t expect to be in this area at all but ended up here by coincidence after taking a high-level request from the adventurer’s guild and seeing the destruction running rampant in the city. Looks like the Overlord of Nazarick isn’t quite the incredible tactician people make him out to be. Before the two continue on the night’s business, Nabe tries to fill Momon in on Evileye’s crush on him, but Momon doesn’t buy it. Evileye tends to her fallen allies and explains that she needs to get them to Lakyus so she can cast resurrection on them and bring them back to fighting health. Momon is surprised to hear this and asks Evileye if he can meet with Lakyus, the elusive leader of the Blue Roses. Before they can leave, however, they see an ominous magical circle in the distance. At the same time, Climb, Brain, Sebas and the others come across the same magical circle, which appears to be some kind of barrier; Momon recognizes it as “The Flames of Gehenna.”

Sometime later, Princess Renner has gathered the heroes of E-Rantel to figure out what to do about this new development. The barrier isn’t harmful, apparently, but within its radius is a horde of demons led by Jaldabaoth. Our heroes seem at wit’s end, but Renner proclaims that Momon will be the hero leading the charge, and with his might, they can enter the fiery ring and bring an end to its assault on E-Rantel. Before they leave on their mission, Gazef gives Climb a ring that can give him incredible power beyond his limits. The camaraderie is strong among these men, but up above in the royal quarters, things are not quite as noble. Princess Renner, along with the marquis, have their own sinister plans for the battle. As the episode ends, we learn that Renner plans for Climb’s death, so that she may resurrect him and take him into “Her care.” Spooky.

Our Take:

The penultimate episode of Overlord season two has left me itching for more. Tying up loose ends here and there with great efficiency, this episode has done most of the groundwork for what should be an awesome climax, and I’m excited to see it’s arrival next week. It’s “steady as she goes” for Overlord, with this episode having strong pacing, good characterization, and some genuinely cute and funny bits in-between to keep a bit of levity in the show. It is kind of boring to see powerful villains get completely decimated so quickly, but that’s par for Overlord and just something I’ve come to expect from the series. Hopefully, next week Princess Renner can show us all what a real villain looks like.
