English Dub Review: Overlord “Jaldabaoth”

The Eight Fingers’ days are numbered.

Overview(Spoilers Below)

The stage is set for a battle of epic proportions, as the Blue Roses and forces of Nazarick stage their raids on the Eight Fingers.

Sebas, Demiurge, Shalltear, Mare and the Pleiades battle maids are gathered in the E-Rantel mansion, readying their battle strategy for the night’s raid. Demiurge occupies the commanding position and instructs every one of the game plan. Everyone is to be sent to the eight different Eight Fingers hideouts, and Sebas is to be sent to go retrieve Tsuare. Shalltear, however, is to remain behind, since Demiurge doesn’t trust her not to give in to her blood frenzy. Also of note is that there is a certain person, unrevealed to the audience, who they have been instructed not to kill, though that will remain a mystery to us for now. Demiurge reminds his forces that there is no room for failure in Ainz Ooal Gown’s forces, and sends them off to enact their plan.

Meanwhile, the Blue Roses, combined with the marqui’s forces, are in a similar position, staging their forces for the fight ahead. Similar to Demiurge’s battle plan, they are sending their forces to destroy all eight of the hideouts, with their soldiers divided amongst seven squadrons. Once the seven squads have dealt with each of the respective hideouts assigned to them to raid, they are all to meet at the eighth and final hideout of the Eight Fingers and end their twisted machinations once and for all.

We follow Climb and Brain as they head to their assigned target, walled off mansion in town, and run across none other than Sebas, who is also here to retrieve Tsuare. The three become allies once again and agree to have Sebas go through the front door (where he is expected) while Climb and Brain infiltrate the stronghold covertly. Once Sebas walks through the gate to the mansion’s courtyard, he finds four powerful members of the Six Arms waiting for him, all masters of their own powerful weapons. After the typical villainous mockery, they ready their weapons and come at Sebas in full force. Sebas uses his godlike martial arts to swiftly butcher his opponents. A face-shattering punch here, a hole in the chest there, and it’s over in the blink of an eye. Then, Solution Epsilon, who had ascended to the mansion’s balcony, reveals that the final member of the Six Arms, Zero, is not there. Meanwhile, Climb and Brain discover Tsuare locked in a prison cell in the basement, and come to her rescue.

We then switch over to another location, an ivy-encrusted mansion out of town, where the leader of the Eight Fingers’ drug trade, Hilma, is residing. Awoken by a bump in the night, she walks downstairs to find innocent-looking Mare standing in her foyer. After revealing that she is the woman in charge of this mansion, the not-so-innocent-after-all Mare pulverizes her leg with a cane, and drags her off kicking and screaming out of the mansion. Also present is one of the Pleiades, Entoma, who is delightfully munching on the remains of an arm from one of Hilma’s dead servants.

Out in front of the mansion, Entoma runs across Gagaran, the burly amazon member of the Blue Roses. Though Entoma tries to diffuse the situation, Gagaran isn’t about to let a monster like her run free, so the two begin to go at it. Entoma uses her powerful insect magic to dominate the fight, countering Gagaran’s brute strength with swiftness and a powerful bug shield. Just as Entoma is about to land the finishing blow, Tia saves Gagaran at the last moment and joins in the fight. Yet, even with the two of them fighting together, they are no match for Entoma, until Evileye arrives to bail them out of trouble.

Evileye tells the other two Blue Roses to stay out of the fight since they’ll only get in the way and starts kicking Entoma’s ass like its nobody’s business. Entoma takes one too many hits and reveals her true form, a terrifying four-legged insect creature. Apparently, she wears her maid mask to hide her hideous form and alters her voice to sound more kawaii. It seems all is lost for Entoma, until the demon lord himself, Demiurge, arrives to take names. Evileye recognizes who he is, and commands Gagaran and Tia to escape while she holds the demon off.

Demiurge is having none of this, however. He uses a powerful flame wall to subdue Tia and Gagaran instantly and starts going toe to toe with Evileye, who can barely keep up with his infernal magical abilities. But just as it seems the fight is over, an immense armored figure appears to turn the tide. It’s Momon (Ainz Ooal Gown in disguise) come to save the day, but for whom?

Our Take:

Things are really heating up in Overlord, as the long-awaited clash between these rising forces in E-Rantel reaches its fever pitch. This is a solid episode all around, with good fights, good dialogue, and some really badass moments with Entoma and Sebas, who I always love to see go to work. It’s not a terribly complex episode or one that develops the plot in a significant way, but a fun brawl that shows off the characters we’ve come to know and love from this series so far.
