Review: Apple & Onion “Hot Dog’s Movie Premiere ; “Bottle Catch”
Hey Peter…caaaatch!
Overview (Spoilers Below)
“Hot Dog’s Movie Premiere”
Apple & Onion head to a movie premiere featuring Hot Dog, but they can’t get in the theater because chicken nugget won’t let them. The best way to get through him? Dipping sauce! Actually, it’s cement and it works out just fine long enough for the boys to catch the one line from Hot Dog. The line inspires Apple & Onion to save Chicken Nugget from his cement shoes and now we’ve got new friends.
“Bottle Catch”
Apple & Onion have a cool street game they play called “Bottle Catch” that soon catches on in popularity and inspires the duo to sell bottles. Eventually, a competitor comes along to try and take advantage of the guys’ popularity so the competitor is challenged to a game of “Bottle Catch” of which Apple & Onion win. The competitor gets booed off the stage and Patti makes a bunch of cash.
Our Take
What a strong cast this show has. It features the simplistic cute stylings that Titmouse, more specifically Chris Prynoski, has done before. Those checking out these characters and seeing similarities to the animated characters of Kirby Buckets wouldn’t be deemed crazy, but they keep this slightly older-skewing edge about them that almost screams MAD magazine. The voice cast has a lot of depth, Kevin Michael Richardson, Paul Scheer, Tasha Ames, and Eugene Mirman play multiple characters that are humanoid but keep the sensibilities that are their ingredient or food product i.e. Chicken Nugget excited to be dipped.
The result is a funny show that more than fills the gap that Regular Show left behind in Cartoon Network-branded content that’s for the older kids that have grown out of Teen Titans Go! and are maybe too scared to jump to a Mr. Pickles. Apple & Onion plays to THAT audience, the audience that I know the producers of this series really like to go for, and as a result, George Gendi has created something a bit more on the nose that Gumball wasn’t.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
