Review: We Bare Bears “Beehive”

BEES!

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The episode begins when the Bears play a small game of backyard football with Tabes. We get to the real meat of the story when Panda falls into some random bushes and upon helping Panda up, discover that he has honey on his head that belongs to a Beehive. Tabes being a Ranger who values animal life as a whole isn’t thrilled at the idea of the Bears coming into further contact with the Hive because Bees die when they sting an invading force. As Tabes further presses the matter that they should keep their distance from the Hive, she leaves to get some safety gear to relocate it. All three of the bears proceed to taste honey for the first time leading to one of the funniest moments where each of them are put into a state of euphoric joy from just the taste alone. This motivates Grizz to take the hive to their cave, but in an effort to take the Bees into consideration, they dress-up in Bee outfits to avoid getting stung.

When the plan works, it’s not without consequence as later on things become unsettling as the Hive Queen later crawls out and orders the Bears to collect pollen leading to a long & funny montage of the Bears collecting insane amounts of flowers while still dressed in Bee costumes. Tabes returns discovering that the Hive is gone and the Bear Cave has become a giant Hive where the Bears minds are now subservient to the Queen, but Tabes manages to find a quick solution to relocate the Hive and the episode ends on a hilarious note when Tabes helps them snap out of it by making the Bears learn the Hard way that they aren’t Bees.

Our Take

I really wasn’t expecting this to be one of the funnier episodes I’ve had to cover, but upon watching this, one plot-hole filled my mind. While past episodes consistently established that the Bears are capable of using humanity’s technology & modern conveniences, cooking their own food and the occasional times where they could afford their own groceries, you’d think they would’ve tasted honey at some point in their youth or purchased bottles of it instead of stealing the hive for themselves. I could see the value of an infinite honey source without having to spend money but that’s just my only nit-pick.

The scenes whenever the Queen made her presence known were effective in making you feel a genuine sense of unease and while we don’t know if we’ll ever see the Queen or the Bees again, I still found myself laughing at the absurdity of the situation. And finally, I give points to the writers for the small Street Fighter references that Grizz made in the episode’s opening.
