English Dub Review: Star Blazers “Wish Upon A Star”

When you…

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Abelt Dessler decides to showcase a dinner and a show, minus the dinner part, as he comes up with a plan to destroy the Yamato and its crew. It’s here we get to meet a bunch of his crew who watch on as Dessler’s plan falls apart much to his amusement. All this goes on while a barely breathing Juzo Okita has to navigate his crew between a rock and a hard place. Fortunately, Okita gets the crew through danger relatively unscathed.

Our Take

Abelt Dessler does a good job of emulating a “Hitler” complex, which is really what all the great villains do. Instill fear. Okita dying is also a great arc to add to the show’s run, so it’ll be fun to see where the producers go with it. In the meantime, the roller coaster ride that was watching Okita navigate his ship through imminent danger showcased this series’ strengths to the nth degree. But the real play in this episode is just the continuing of chess piece strokes between humans and Gamilans, and with over a dozen more episodes to go, expect to see the Gamilans continue to get more aggressive as the season rolls on.
